Unseen,
Again, so screw it.
And again, to tie it back to my original post, no system can as yet turn back time or bring the dead back to life. But at least Immortalists, Transhumanists, and Singularitarians in the remaining freer societies can rightly say:
March 15, 2024 at 3:54 pm #53012Bagels is not a fair test. Sure bagels are Jewy food. But there is a universalism and cosmopolitan appeal that renders the test meaningless. If you are accused of being a Jew hater you can only be untarnished or tarnished depending on perspective by eating a disgusting gefilte fish with horseradish. Grin and bear it Jew hater.
Speaking of bagels i got some bagels at the market from Panera’s and was surprised by their quality. And then i got em again and they were much smaller and poor quality. That F’ng shrinkflation BS is getting too big for its britches.
I sure hope the UN and Egypt are taken to task for that. It is a crime to do what they did.
I doubt many realize how ubiquitous Jew hatred is in the middle east. It is so damn visceral and heartfelt. If something good happens to an Arab in the middle east they say a Jew just died. The worst calumny is to be labeled a Jew. Ya know Mohammed was quite the guy and he had a special vitriol for Jews. Maybe he was pissed they rejected him. The hatred is taught in the schools and the mosques and the greater culture. Little boys have dreams of becoming Jew killers. If you doubt me on this point listen to what Arab Muslim apostates say in re. to how Jews are viewed there. No doubt that is why there was an immediate attack upon the Jews in 48. We KNOW from history that surrounding nations care little to not at all for Palestinians. Also all over the middle east the Arab media lied out of its ass about the Hamas attack. Egypt was allied with Israel in fighting Hamas. But that did not stop Egypt from towing the line in stirring up Jew hatred after Israel had been attacked. It is dangerous in Egypt to tell the truth about it.
And to Enco’s point about genocide we can be nearly certain that if Jews became pacifists and allowed Hamas and company to rock and roll there would be not a Jew alive in short order. Can you imagine the dancing, jubilation, triumphant Muslims ridding the holy land of the scourge?
Add on to that Jew haters of the west finally have an excuse for their irrational feelings and behavior. The progressives have spun a tale of evil that gives justification to the racism. Now you don’t have to go to obvious BS like kidnapping babies or poisoning the wells or being aligned with the devil. The entire construct of Israel and its evil ways is a mini religion. And in the same way that theists have an inability to critique their religious beliefs Jew haters are incapable of critiquing their construct in re to Israel. The more fervent in both instances the greater the compartmentalization. The aftermath of the initial attack on Israel before Israel had even responded proves how successful the progressive Jew haters have been.
To state the obvious the progressives are a despicable lot in perpetuating the latent hatred and causing it to bubble over like pea soup onto that ostensibly clean stove top. Concomitantly they belittle Arab Muslims by never applying any moral scrutiny to their actions. If the displacement of Arabs from Israel is wrong why isn’t the displacement of Jews from every single Arab nation? I could go on and on about it. Why belabor the obvious?
And the thing about that double standard which i sometimes call microscope/shitty telescope is that it is patronizing to Muslim Arabs. Why would the west expect decency from them? So so much brutality and wanton cruelty in those middle eastern nations and it is a footnote or less.
Muslims on Muslim violence and cruelty and NO CIVIL RIGHTS is insignificant. Why? Why should the west be critical of Islam and its role in the marginilization and persecution of women and gays and on and on? Arab Muslims apparently do not count. Well, other than the ones in Gaza and West Bank but we all know why that exception is carved. But you can pretend that anything critical of Islam is an affront to individual Muslims. You damn bigots!
Ishkabibble enough of my scribble.
March 15, 2024 at 4:01 pm #53013@ Jake
Do even Jews actually like gefilte fish? or is it a test of faith? My widower father had a Jewish girlfriend and I remember sitting at her dinner table on some Jewish holiday and when the plate of gefilte fish was handed to me, I handed it to the next person without taking any. When a food looks disgusting and doesn’t smell appetizing, all my senses are telling me not to put it in my mouth.

Do Kenyans like ugali? Do Germans like schnitzel? Do Irish like corned beef and cabbage?
Funny how the two jars of gefilte fish in my local market just keep gathering dust. Forget supply and demand. Dropping the price of the jar is not gonna move this product. You couldn’t give it away to starving Palestinians. I would rather die of starvation than eat Jew food!
March 15, 2024 at 10:03 pm #53017A few years back, in Atlanta, GA, I was talking with a couple I had just been introduced to about the foods we might have on our running or hiking days. I was telling them that I put beets, a banana, some spinach and half an apple with a dash of fresh orange juice and ginger into a blender. I don’t really need it in order to be active but it is part of my routine on the days I run. It is just to focus my mind.
You put a banana into cold Borscht???
I had no idea! 🙂
We all might get to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas together again this year as both happen the same week. Something 4 atheists can look forward to.
March 15, 2024 at 10:14 pm #53018And for no particular reason other that I just stumbled upon it.….
March 16, 2024 at 1:38 am #53019After a day on the trail anything edible tastes like manna from the spaghetti monster.
It is the simple things that make life worthwhile. If your body is capable then use it. Get outside and into the outdoors away from it all. Sit by a fire in the dark and experience the wonder of our existence.
March 16, 2024 at 8:38 am #53020Jake,
Gefilte fish does look unappetizing in a jar, but I think Nova Salmon in cream cheese making a lox spread is delicious as a schmear for bagels or matzo. Do give your own cuisine some credit.
I may be blaspheming here, but maybe if gefilte fish were batter-dipped or coated in panko bread crumbs and air fried, it might be more attractive and tasty. Southerners would jump right on it! 🐠🐟🎏🎣
March 16, 2024 at 2:32 pm #53021Enco,
Gefilte fish is not as disgusting as one might suspect. It is not good by any means but it is not retchworthy.
There is lots of good Jewish food. Jewish deli meats on Jewish rye to die for. And with the discoveries about processed meats that to die for line works two ways. Matzoh ball soup is good. Chicken soup is good. knishes are good. Lox and whitefish very good. Gribonas is very good. And i know Israelis have completely different fare from what i know as Jewish cuisine. I think it is highly influenced by the cuisine of the region.
It is wicked pissar trying cuisine from different cultures. That is one of the cool things about a city like NY.
March 16, 2024 at 4:10 pm #53022Jewish deli meats on Jewish rye to die for.
Back in a heavily-Jewish suburb of Cleveland was a now-closed Jewish delicatessen named Corky and Lennie’s and they had the best corned beef on light caraway rye sandwiches, with about 2-3 inches of thinly-sliced corned beef on them.
I learned from a Jewish friend (yes, despite my alleged antisemitism, I have been friends with Jews) that there are only three approved condiments for a proper corned beef sandwich: yellow mustard (not the brown kind), horseradish, and Russian dressing, which is kind of like thousand island dressing but with horseradish as one of the ingredients. Both are based on mayo and ketchup. This is interesting because the one thing you can do to show you know nothing about corned beef is to put ketchup on it.
Also, corned beef sandwiches are to be served neat, bread and meat with the chosen condiment. No lettuce and certainly no slice of tomato. Yuck!!!
March 16, 2024 at 7:02 pm #53023Agreed on no lettuce, tomato or ketchup. I would limit it to mustard. If you add Russian it is like a reuben. But the corned beef in good NY Jewish delis is not neat; it’s overflowing the sides and very fatty. Holy fuck it is a gustatory gasm.
March 16, 2024 at 7:05 pm #53024‘Some of my best friends are black.’
That is a tell for bigotry. But i am not sure it is typically the case. Seems to me genuine friendship is an indication of lack of bigotry against a particular ethnic group. I have however seen in college how White bigots dated Black girls because they thought them inferior and there was some weird sexual dynamic.
Curious to know the impression of others here on that chestnut…some of my best friends are blank.
March 16, 2024 at 8:04 pm #53025@ Jake, when I said “neat” I meant it like when served liquor neat, which means no water or ice cube, just the liquor. So, in the context of a corned beef sandwich, no lettuce or slaw, no tomatoes, no banana peppers, just the proper condiment(s). Mustard + horseradish is a very common combination of condiments on corned beef, even among the Children of Moses.
Here is a picture of an acceptable Jewish corned beef sandwich, though it looks like this one was ordered lean. I always asked for “less lean”:

Be careful. Your implicit definition of what having a Jewish friend means sounds a bit prejudicial. There are friends (bosom buddies, best friends for life) and there are friends (someone who one likes and whose company is more than tolerable). I currently have only one real male friend. He’s not Jewish. He’s Bengali. I’m not a highly sociable person. I once told my daughter that “I’m not antisocial, I’m asocial.” I simply don’t need human company the way it seems most people do. They would only distract me from my basic enjoyments which include writing, Youtubing, and communing with my cat.

I have a friend who is mixed race (Welsh (I think) & Black American airman) and she was involved with a group of Labour party activists (left-wing, supposedly anti-racist). They used their anti-racist virtue-signalling as a cover for all kinds of psychologically abusive behaviour. The lot of them were cockroaches. They perpetuated colonial attitudes of “black women are just for sex” and those who wouldn’t play ball were vilified.
