Reg,
And as Dr. Scott would say: Und it didn’t!
And the lesson I took from the book is:
Never take Sein Und Zeit sight unseen. đ
March 7, 2025 at 4:19 am #56596I’ll say one thing, if Trump’s ultimate goal was to get Western Europe to begin handling more of their own military defense and “ante up” on spending, it is working. This idea that he may be just faking his love affair with Putin to achieve this goal would indicate that he is a very clever man, indeed. LOL !
March 7, 2025 at 4:57 am #56597I started to read adult books at age 6. Just like Reg with 10k steps daily i stepped through at least an hour of reading each night. When i was into a book i would read all day on no school days. Even in college i was always reading. Going to law school is what screwed me up. Felt guilty if i was not reading law. Never got back to it as a daily routine. I hated idea of being a lawyer. Took LSAT on a lark and scored well. Fooled myself into thinking i would get JD and do something nonlegal. My cousin who i ultimately partnered with in a law office was the one who suggested i take LSAT as i could not decide what the f to do to make a living. At age 12 he challenged my dad the atheist how he could fail to believe in god and it literally took my dad 2 minutes to deconvert him. Cousin went from an ignorant Catholic to a voracious reader and never stopped reading. My Aunt hated my dad forever more. Am reading a Yates novel now. I think that Irish Ape book looks dope. The notion that critical thinking is the way to save humanity is what i have been thinking for a while. Just not sure humans are capable of that. And even if they get by academically in such courses will they apply it? Amazing no schools to my knowledge are based on that premise. Imagine how much more engaging school would be if in high school we are debating contemporary, historical and philosophical issues? On the other hand it makes perfect sense that nobody no how wants to make central part of education how to reason. I should not have to finish that thought for you. And i wonât.
Deciding what to do for a living in the US often comes down to random events unless you have a wealthy family. High schools offered little help back in my day. You would think something this important would involve some constructive planning. Plus, Americans are mostly financially illiterate. That’s how the corps want us. Clawing out of debt for life.

I agree he is right to get Europe to spend more on defence. But he would be wrong to appease Putin by giving his boyfriend everything he wants.

When I was in high school back in the 1960’s deciding which foreign language to study, I was advised that German was for technical people, French for artistically-oriented people, and Spanish was the easy language of little use for anything other than easily getting a better grade.
Over time, learning Spanish would give a student far better opportunities in life.
Today, I’d advise a student to learn Spanish or Chinese or, better, both.
March 7, 2025 at 4:08 pm #56601Trump is learning the hard way that when you try to force people to do things, you are actually giving them an opportunity to go to a Plan B. Trying to force Ukraine to accept giving up land or mineral resources, countries like Poland, France, and Finland seem ready to step up to keep that from happening. Soon, the entire E.U. may unite against Russia and the U.S.
Imposing stiff tariffs on trade with Canada and Mexico, those countries are looking to beef up trade with Europe and China, leaving the U.S. in the cold.
March 7, 2025 at 7:00 pm #56602Robert and Simon,
It’s like I’ve said earlier: It’s better if Putin has to fear multiple mini-superpowers than just one superpower.
Of course, this means that Europeans will have to spend less taxdollars on butter and more on guns and adopt free-market solutions to things like health care and housing. This will also mean Europeans expelling Islamists in their midst who are hostile toward preservation of the nation.
Oh, and it means Europe will have to get energy-independent. Germany cutting back on nuclear plants for flimsy, windmills and solar power while being dependent on Russia for petrol-derivative fuel was just all-around dumb.
Here, Trump may be doing good despite his lack of impulse control between his mouth and chickpea-sized brain.

March 7, 2025 at 7:27 pm #56604I can see a skit in which Putin is feeding on Trump’s brain with fava beans and a good chianti.
Fava beans was a staple of the atlantic slave trade. Ever have em? I like em sauteed in olive oil with pasta. Never found any good ones in cans but i know a Syrian guy who says such exist.
March 7, 2025 at 8:37 pm #56605Jake,
That movie gave me a strong aversion to ever trying fava beans or chianti, as well as an unhealthy aversion to moisturizer.
But surprisingly not to androgynous characters on screen. Milton Berle, Curly Howard, and Bugs Bunny in drag were more positive examples.

March 7, 2025 at 9:41 pm #56607Enco, loved your explanation of your edits.
As a youngster I had a massive crush on Antony Hopkins, having watched him play Pierre in  a BBC TV series adaptation of War & Peace.
The best part of the SOTL movie was the fact I wanted Hannibal to win, even with the atrocities heâd carried out. Â The movie WAS the villain.
He must be 90 by now, but heâs definitely my favourite actor.
(Favourite actress is Maggie Smith).

March 8, 2025 at 2:15 am #56609The U.S. is more vulnerable than Trump and his advisors seem to believe. He instituted tariffs supposedly to benefit American workers and the auto industry. In response, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum shows that Mexico actually holds American auto workers’ jobs in her hand. Trump apparently didn’t notice that the American auto industry was not demanding tariffs. Wonder why?

In 2023, Mexico supplied 47% of the fruit and nuts imported to the United States, and 63% of the vegetables imported. Mexico is the largest source of horticultural imports for the U.S.
The US is big on wheat, corn and soybeans because big machines. Guess we have to start growing more fruit and veg and without Mexican farm workers. OK kids, drop those phones and get out there. There are better ways to encourage production in the US than tariffs and trade wars.

A MAGA acquaintance of mine thinks that with the immigrant farm workers gone, people receiving entitlement money can/will take their place. I find this to be hopelessly and unrealistically optimistic. His ilk seem to think that almost everyone on Medicare/Medicaid is grifting.
A hint of how divorced from reality Trump is came when he opined recently that remote workers probably spend a lot of their time playing golf. He seems to think that everyone is as enthusiastic about golf as he is. He doesn’t realize that most people either can’t justify the costs and/or simply don’t have the time to become a golfer.
