I acknowledge your affirmation. And I equally say that extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. So, whenever and if ever you find the proof of another author for the quote attributed to JFK, I will say I was mistaken about the author. Until then, I’ll just say whoever said the quote was wrong.
The Israelis manage to be innovative and productive in spite of the incessant threats and attacks. Walking on broken windows aint stopped em none.
Never denied that. The science headlines from The Jerusalem Post proves that daily. What Hazlitt and myself say with The Broken Window Fallacy is: How much more would Israelis accomplish the day they no longer have to stop their “broken windows?”
I assume the majority of Israelis both understand and support conscription. Women, men and all able bodied do your duty unless you are an Arab or Haredi but we want you too and hope you will join. When a country is attacked the natural tendency is to have its citizens rally under the flag and volunteer. That tendency is tested and found wanting when there has been a long pax. That does not happen in Israel. If it aint a war it is terrorism. Israelis know they have to fight or they won’t survive. Under those conditions conscription is necessary.
As long as Israelis want to survive, no conscription is necessary. And if any don’t want to survive, no conscription will save them. And would you want Jeffrey Sachs and Noam Chomsky dragging allegators into your bivouac anyway?

jakelafortParticipantEnco, the oft-cited extraordinary claims requirement is a logical one. Not sure this is an extraordinary claim however. Has anyone defined it satisfactorily? On the other hand your skepticism is sensible. Memories are fallible. Sometimes the speaker intends to deceive.
Nothing too extraordinary about misattribution of quotes. There is info enough on misattribution of quotes both quotes the speaker never uttered and quotes that ought to be credited to another. “It is impossible to provide an exact number for how many famous quotes are credited to the wrong person, as new instances are constantly identified while others circulate on social media, but researchers have documented
hundreds, if not thousands, of such cases. One expert, literary scholar Gerald Krieghofer, has cataloged over 500 fake quotes commonly attributed to famous personalities.” AINever denied that. I was not familiar with broken window although i once broke a window from a golf course when i hooked it into a window of a home along the golf course. I took ownership and paid.
But it strikes me that broken window fallacy is a guide not a rule. Life is not that simple. Military technology drives other tech and advancements in science for instance. Without those broken windows the ‘stay the course’ might be less productive.
“As long as Israelis want to survive, no conscription is necessary. And if any don’t want to survive, no conscription will save them. And would you want Jeffrey Sachs and Noam Chomsky dragging allegators into your bivouac anyway.”
I think Israel needs conscription. Ponder the different branches of the IDF and the need to have immediate reaction to the ongoing attacks. I know that the IDF complains of insufficient numbers. (I wish they had granted expedited citizenship to the Druze of Syria…would have been win/win)
The history of warfare has countless examples of military strategy and weaponry being outdated and maladaptive. The Russians are just one example in being behind the times when Peter the Great ruled and modernized and later during first world war and on. Native Americans were stunned how stupidly British fought. Clausewitz was a military strategist whose ideas continued to be followed even after they should have been understood as outdated.
Israel on other hand demands and depends on innovative strategy and rapid adaptation. They must stay ahead of their maniacal, genocidal neighbors who literally obsess over wiping out Israel and killing Jews. So they need people power at all times in all of the branches of the IDF. After October 7 that is even more stark than it was earlier. Also listen to the women who had the lowest rung duty and warned the highers up that Hamas was preparing to attack! Without conscription the numbers would be lower especially if a decade or greater passes without significant attacks being waged against Israel.

jakelafortParticipantThanks Reg.
That lake is so beautiful. I bet those books have really cool pics. And that science center is pretty cool. Been there half a dozen times or so. I would take 7 to 2 they have a copy of Spring on Squam. Sad thing is that squam Lake had the cleanest water in NH from memory. I remember drinking it from faucet. I don’t know how long it is been non-potable but i have read how forever chemicals are polluting it today. Really sad.

JFK using someone else’s quote unattributed would be extraordinary to many, though this may be part of the Romanticism of “Camelot” and it was only a model anyway.🇬🇧😁

The Broken Window Fallacy does not deny that war is sometimes unavoidable, necessary, and just. It simply acknowledges that it doesn’t result in net prosperity in a society. It may be a gain for Blackwater, Raytheon, and Springfield Arms, but at the expense of Amana, Oneida, and Quaker Oats and other civilian enterprises.

A superior strategy would use maximum brainpower and only judicious use of resources and as few warm bodies as possible, negating the call for conscription. And as Sun Tzu observed, “The wise General wins without fighting.”
One thing Israel should learn from Gaza that wouldn’t involve one conscript would be to work on the minds of Palestinian civilians. Flood and jam Palestinian media with evidence showing that Hamas’ and Hezbollah’s aims are detrimental to their lives and well-being, and that “Pie-In-The-Sky-In-The-Sweet-By-And-By” is an illusion. Do it enough and do it right and Palestinians will at least non-cooperate with Hamas and Hezbollah or even violently resist.
And once Palestinians see who their real enemies are, Israel can take notes from Tom and Jerry and really do some real Culture Jamming:
Also, Israel could use technology like excavation, LRAD, and dragonfly drones to irritate and chase Hamas out of their spider holes until they have no place to hide among civilians. Then Hamas could be picked off easily with minimal threat to civilians.
These are just a few ways that Israel and the rest of the civilized world can defeat enemies without conscription of citizens into meat grinders and without giving up the high ground.

jakelafortParticipantBroken window net prosperity equation is not easily calculated.
Israel’s ongoing security challenges have fostered rapid, war-driven innovations, particularly in medical technology and defense. Key developments include
AI-driven battlefield triage (Aidoc), specialized vascular surgeries, 3D-printed prosthetics, and advanced wound treatments. These innovations have significantly boosted survival rates for soldiers and civilians AIMaximum brainpower is attained in maximizing bodies at disposal of IDF.
Could not be in greater agreement that the optimal and most effective way to achieve peace is through education. In this shitstorm i have learned that Israelis have culturally adopted this FUCK U attitude borne of their travails to EXPLAINING THEMSELVES.
Well it is time to get in the battle for minds. I have never been more convinced how impressionable, easily led, easily deceived and manipulated the vast majority of us. I say formulate a strategy for each form of Jew hatred as indicated herein.

It’s quite easy to calculate. Things that are destroyed are not wealth and cannot create more wealth. So destruction is loss on top of loss, and loss is not net prosperity.

Again, no net prosperity from destruction.

How so? No one asks for the thoughts of conscripts. Conscripts are not utilized and provisioned in the battlefield to think. They certainly can’t think when they are dead.
Again, no net prosperity from destruction.
This all should have been evident when you accidentally knocked out the window while golfing and paid up for it. The good walk spoiled should have been evident too.

jakelafortParticipantThe more advanced broken window opens door equation is apparent with Israel and its military defense. (How does one measure prosperity? For my money it is not reducible to economics and monetary scales.)

The crucible of exigent circumstances produces innovation and productivity in a way that simple abstract need does not. On a personal level how many of us faced with a deadline after having fucked off for too long do what we gotta do and do it well? I am thinking of Bret Harte, author, and friend of Twain who would bang out these great stories with a deadline and a bottle of whisky. Now think about the macrocosm and a colony of Israelis who are under attack AGAIN and solve problems that would never be solved without that existential threat. Absolutely no comparison in what they will produce v. peacetime living is good and pressure is minimal milieu. And the shit they produce leads to further technological advances in warfare and defense along with medical and other technologies. It is an arms race in effect and if Israel does not stay ahead of it Israel will cease to be. I doubt there has ever been a nation of so few who have accomplished so much.
How so you ask?
Ask Plato. The IDF follows that model.

Ackshuyally, all chemicals (and thus all Matter) are forever chemicals, including water, the source of all life and all Sandy Frank Gamara movies according to Mystery Science Theater 3000. The only issue is whether the specific chemicals will keep humans as a going concern.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. So did you and Ethel and “Old Poop” Norman watch the loons and pick strawberries alongside Squam Lake? Was there a ballet called Squam Lake too?

Plato was the godfather of totalitarianism, and his Republic was an inspiration for Christian Theocratic, Fascist, Nazi, and Communist tyrannies, none of which were Cool for Katz or any other name. Sir Karl Popper had many awful things to say about Plato’s Utopian vision.
Yes, sense of urgency can help innovation, but is not in itself sufficient. And anything innovated with a bottle of whiskey is purely by mistake. 🤡 It also takes freedom of thought and free movement of Capital to make innovation real.

jakelafortParticipantEnco this is what AI has to say. BTW i just read something in Science Daily about how AI is sometimes inaccurate in what it says about science.
“Forever chemicals” (
PFAS) are synthetic compounds that do not break down in the environment or human body due to extremely strong carbon-fluorine bonds. Unlike most other pollutants that degrade over time, PFAS persist for decades or longer, accumulating in water, soil, and living organisms.
Key Differences Between Forever Chemicals (PFAS) and Other PollutantsPersistence (The “Forever” Aspect): While most pollutants break down through sunlight, bacteria, or chemical reactions, PFAS are highly resistant to degradation. They can remain in the environment for thousands of years.
Bioaccumulation: PFAS accumulate over time in the body. Studies suggest at least 97% of Americans have detectable PFAS compounds in their blood, which can take years to reduce, unlike many pollutants that pass through the system relatively quickly.
Chemical Structure: PFAS are characterized by a unique, incredibly strong carbon-fluorine bond. Other pollutants (such as plastics or traditional chemical waste) have weaker bonds that can eventually be broken down by environmental processes.
Source and Ubiquity: PFAS are specifically used for water-repellent, stain-resistant, and nonstick properties (e.g., Teflon, food packaging, firefighting foam). Other contaminants like PM2.5 (air particles) are often byproducts of combustion.
Mobile and Widespread: Unlike some contaminants that stay close to their source, PFAS are incredibly mobile and have been found globally, from tap water to remote areas like Antarctica. The Squam Lake Too joke was cornier than colored popcorn. Or is it popcorn of color?
I have never seen strawb’s there. Lots and lots of blueberries however. High and low bush. And i have stopped my boat on an island and picked em from the water. Those tiny wild berries bury store berries stored on ferries.
Used to hear loons early morning and late at night. It is a haunting sound. Truly lovely. Listen and weep. I also read a book about some bird that is now extinct when i was at Squam. Great Auk maybe?

The idea that we are not fungible goods and that our attributes ought to be harnessed both for the individual and the state is imo a valid one.

AI can’t help us wake from the sleep of reason if it’s creators and users are sleepwalking.
The AI search on PFAS chemicals shows them to be some Pretty Fuck Around Shit, though a regular Web search could have revealed that too.. I hope we can filter PFAS and reuse them in a better way before we Find Out.
Good argument against the lefty isolationists:
Wise words here. However even foes of the Mullahs can validly criticize how Trump has executed the War. He told the Iranian people that “Help is on the way” after 30,000+ were slaughtered and to “rise and take over their Government” when he hasn’t allowed the flow of arms to them the whole time. Yet another cat-nap of Reason.
The level of dialogue between factions on the Right has been reduced to middle school Mean Girl gossip and dick jokes and comments on Leftie Mediaite.com could easily be found on Stormfront.com.
Reason has taken a cocktail of liquor and Nite-All. Keep the drinks to mint tea and watch your glass.
