    Reg,

Although it was bad news and a shock, I am grateful that you gave news of the death of George H. Smith.

Though I had my doubts before reading it, George H. Smith’s work Atheism: The Case Against God both systematically presented all the historical arguments for a God and then thoroughly destroyed in my mind any reason to believe in the existence of any God.

In doing so, it thoughly shut the book on The Good Book’s divine origins as well.

And although it laser-focused upon the Judeo-Christian God, the arguments apply equally to Allah and any other proported Supernatural Omnific Being. A thoroughly great work from a great man!

I’m kind of disappointed that I didn’t hear about this from Libertarian circles. It seems Pro-Trump and Anti-Trump Derangement Syndrome and Culture Wars have simply deranged and poisoned everything, including the Libertarian Movement(s).

A teacher has been legally allowed to discriminate against the children in her “care” because she is a Christian.

Trans youth are under attack by legislators in some twenty states right now, including policies advising child protective services to treat trans care as child abuse, or in the case of Alabama, putting forward legislation to criminalize it.

Trans identities are frequently distorted into an attack on religious freedoms, an attack or women’s rights, an attack on freedom of speech (and on and on). But 99.99% of the time it’s just about people trying to live our lives as best we can in a society that is strangely fucking obsessed with sex and gender and putting people in their places.

Right now an increasingly common tactic (which is really just an old tactic rebranded) is to refer to anyone who supports trans care and trans rights as a ‘groomer’ thus fostering an association between pedophiles and the 2SLGBTQ+ population. But it’s not like these people give a fuck about protecting children, anymore than this teacher likely gives a fuck about some bizarre religious conviction regarding pronouns and names.

But hey, let’s all just live doing whatever the fuck we want as long as we can justify it under some thinly-veiled, religiously-themed bullshit.

I hope the students in that class ice that teacher out. Certainly if I were a student in that class, I’d just refuse to answer to any name or gendered language with which I didn’t identify. Right now it’s only at the level of an injunction, so while the school can’t penalize the teacher, that doesn’t mean school or district policy is nullified.

@Encogitationer – Yes, the arguments in his book are laser-focused.

George H. Smith also wrote “Why Atheism” which is the book that helped me understand my own atheism by giving it a vocabulary to explain it to myself. It has a highlighted comment or mark, all made by me, on most pages and I often reference it. I have the same copy for 21 years.  While I had been an atheist for many years without really using the term (as a self-descriptor) reading it was like having a valet service done on my brain that removed any lingering dogma and any trace of religious indoctrination that I had been subjected to as a child. It gave me a clarity that I am not sure I would have obtained elsewhere. I just know that Hitchens and Dawkins were fans of it and had read it before they produced their books. Hitchens is now drinking a glass of JWB with him (at least in my mind they are) 🙂

The following is my approach to debating Christians (and other theists). Over the last 25 years I have helped a few hundred people cross the bridge of doubts from their citadel of certitudes to the vast land of reason. Most of the time I have referenced “Why Atheism”? to some extent. Once I see that we are making progress I will provide them with a copy of it. No-one, to the best of my knowledge, has ever remained a theist upon reading (and studying) it. I have purchased over 40 copies of it 😊

If you want your beliefs to be taken seriously by others, then you must present them as something more than personal notations on your state of mind. It is only by giving reasons that you free your beliefs from the bonds of subjectivity. A belief becomes objective when it is justified with reasons that can be evaluated by others. If you don’t want to subject your beliefs to this kind of critical review then you should keep them to yourself.

I will therefore demand from any theist that wants to engage me in conversation about any god must first justify their belief in the existence of God with objective reasons, i.e., evidence and arguments that can be evaluated by rational methods. If they are unwilling or unable to do so then I will suggest that they re-evaluate what they claim to believe and also consider the more reasonable alternative of atheism. Yes, you can call me a militant atheist if you want but that is only to remove the focus of critical light from your subjective claims. But by you doing so I am now compelled to question your judgement and your sincerity. I am not being militant. I am asking you to explain what you believe and WHY you believe it. You are the one that knocked on my door to tell me about it.  You say your faith is a “reasoned faith” so explain the reasoning to me. As Thomas Paine said, “to argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead”.

I hate to say it, but a rational Democratic Party should probably hang back a bit and let the Republicans self destruct. Since it seems Roe v. Wade will be effectively reversed, the Republicans (who normally claim to be all about giving power to the states) are talking about a nationwide ban on abortion, taking it away from the states, in other words. Tasting blood in the water, some in the party are already talking about banning all forms of contraception, especially the two kinds of pills available to women (the regular birth control pill and the “morning after” pill).

Anti-LGBTQ and anti-Muslim extremists are starting to come out of the world as well as those who want to rid the society of porn.

The more they talk this way, the more fence-sitters will get off the fence and vote Democrat no matter their complaints about them.

Trump is starting to fear how his anti-abortion support is likely to bite him in the ass:

Exclusive: Trump Is Telling Allies His Record on Abortion Could Hurt His 2024 Chances

In the meantime, the Dems need to just STFU about pronouns, abortion rights, masks, shut downs, and anything else that might drive someone to vote GOP.

You can’t win elections by driving people away and you somehow have to survive in a world where the issues and people’s motivations are complicated.

The bold willingness of cisgender men on the forum to throw trans and women’s rights under the bus for a plan that sounds like it was cooked up by a third-grader high on glue is noted.

Your writing skills are dazzling, but trans and women’s rights will be best moved forward by the Democrats and you win elections not by being politically correct but by getting the most people to vote for you.

What’s your plan? Say the woke things just so you can say you said them even at the cost of ending up with the party that, as opposed to doing less than you’d like would actively oppose you?

Make this interesting for us cissies: What would YOU do?

And these are not your ordinary Republicans. Our democracy is set on a path to vote itself out of existence.

The startling naïvité expressed by one member than echoed by another that the assault on trans rights and women’s rights—a fairly persistent right wing propaganda campaign—will just somehow sort of tidy up by waiting for the Republicans to implode, potentially. Then the Democrats can supposedly take the up the reins again and somehow end up further ahead by starting from further back than they are now.

‘Cisgender men on the forum’ wasn’t intended to be categorical, but rather a reference to the low stakes position some have in the conversation, perhaps divorced from how rights have actually moved forward or the actual means by which transphobic and misogynistic movements tend to maintain steam or even grow.

Dems certainly know how to beat themselves with a hammer. Feminist vs trans wars really don’t help liberalism… at all. “Defund the Police” is an idiotic rally cry. Lots of this stuff not gonna be an issue when the rising seas overtake Manhattan and paved roads are melting.

Let’s see how wonderful it will be when His Majesty Donald Trump gets re-elected and fair voting is swept away. I’m sure it’ll all be fine. No perspective in the Democratic party.
