@Lars. It’s always interesting to see a decline in religious avenues, but this one is not that, so what is it? Is Putin aiming for an atheist state? I very much doubt it, the Orthodox Church is pretty powerful over there. Is he aiming for a single state religion? Seems a bit more likely. Then we get to why?
Perhaps once he is operating in…[Read more]

To Do or not To Do 10 years, 11 months ago@Unseen, so I can have an ad hominem dog bite? I know it’s an extreme, I’m using it to test your basis of definition.
I actually understand the term “ad hominem attack”. It’s when you attack the person rather than the subject matter. I think we’re all good with that, and it makes sense.
I’m still a bit perplexed over ‘ad hominem fallacy”. Is…[Read more]

Absolutely. Faith and belief are very emotional fundamentally – and science is factual. They seem to appeal to different parts of the brain. When…[Read more]

Swastika Information, fantastic, the sign is at least 12,000 years old!

@_Robert_ that’s fascinating, and I had no idea the image commonly known as a Swastika was the Native American symbol. How cool is that? (the info, not the logo).

To Do or not To Do 10 years, 11 months ago@Unseen, I get it despite the example you typed. I think it can be taken as read that you gave definitions that work for you. What is at question, is whether there exists a formal external definition, where we can all point to and agree.
However, defining “ad hominem” as literally anything opposing the person means that a punch on the nose…[Read more]

We would have no way of knowing what the south would be like if they’d successfully seceded all those years ago. Certainly the north would also have been affected.
Thanks @Unseen for that interesting snippet of the wives revolt. It’s the first I’d heard of it.
Going back briefly to the term “war of northern aggression”, I’ve only ever heard…[Read more]

To Do or not To Do 10 years, 11 months ago@Unseen. I think the point is that there is no objective definition of the difference between “attack” and “fallacy” when they are appended to the term “ad hominem”.
@Davis seems to appreciate that you have a personal definition difference, but alleges that your definitions are just that. Personal.
What would be interesting is if there were…[Read more]

@erock68la I was down in Louisiana, Baton Rouge are and stayed around a month. Admittedly they weren’t the most educated people I stayed with, but they were fun. I heard the expression “War of Northern Aggression” for the first time in Bourbon Street Market and when I questioned what it was, I realized they meant the Civil War. Fascinated by…[Read more]

@Belle. If you as an atheist were to meet a theist on neutral ground, then you are both entitled to say your thing as equally valid participants. You could call theists ignorant and they could call atheists stupid. Much of a muchness.
If you as an atheist went and sat in a church during a theist session, and for every statement made from a…[Read more]

To Do or not To Do 10 years, 11 months ago@Davis. Re your huh?, I was also busy huffing, but I had another read of Unseens comments and I realize he is simply pointing out that racism and being gay aren’t comparable in that we believe we are born with our sexual orientation, whereas we learn racism.
