Sunday School 2 weeks ago@fullermingjr No religion is rational by the very definition of the word rational – derived from logic and reason etc.
A religion is by definition a faith based construct, for which belief is required, not reason.
A Venn diagram of Religion and Rationality would barely touch at their potential meeting point.
I suppose Religion could be…[Read more] -

Sunday School 4 years, 4 months ago@fullermingjr – Good to hear from you again. A Happy New Year to you and yours too.
Secularism is a very misunderstood term. Many religious groups wrongly equate it with atheism. In the USA the First amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
The gover…[Read more]

@Fullermingjr – If my worldview is correct, I’m not sure such a transfer would be possible….
According to Christian teaching do you not believe that your mind will be merged into a new body on the Day of Judgement? At the very least don’t you believe you will have some sort of “continuity of experience” as an immortal in the presence of your God?

@Fullermingjr – I will re-purpose a debate question I setup on another site for a discussion here along the lines you suggest. There will be some rules to it but the “the game” will only begin once you are happy with them. The main one is that quoting the Bible will not count as an answer. I suspect you already agree to that. It is almost 2am…[Read more]

I don’t fully agree that faith should be removed from our pluralistic public square. Yet, I am convinced that many evangelical Pastors, opinion leaders, and radio personalities get this wrong, theologically speaking.
@fullermingjr, when you say “faith”, do you include Hinduism or Wiccan in our public square and if so, what would be the point of…[Read more]

@Fullermingjr: YES, this is the vain in which I was asking my question about why these Confederate symbols and American chattel slavery can be argued as wrong without referencing religion.
In general terms are you asking us “How can we be good without God”?

@Fullermingjr: In fact, I’m taking an introduction to philosophy this fall.
As I have said more than once on this site; the study of Philosophy is but the introduction to Philosophy. I am paraphrasing a quote from Hegel.
There is a new book out shortly that I think I will buy.
Strange Fruit: Why Both Sides are Wrong in the Race Debate. I was a…[Read more]

@fullermingjr – I think I understand what you mean, when you say, what is the non-religious basis for saying that slavery is wrong?
I’m saying it’s because it violates certain fundamental norms or values, including respecting the dignity and personal autonomy of the individual, and not harming people unnecessarily, especially innocent people, and…[Read more]

This maybe TLTR but I will run with it.
@Fullermingjr: From an atheist and humanist perspective, is the idea of enslaving other human beings for ones profit and pleasure “wrong” because it hurts the collective social and potentially biological evolutionary development of our species?
We are humans before we are atheists just as you are bef…[Read more]

@fullermingjr – there’s the religious argument for why slavery is bad, and there’s the atheist, or secular, or scientific, or evolutionary, or moral psychological, argument for why slavery is bad. The two line up.

@Fullermingjr. That is a good question and it is a common misconception and theists, especially Evangelicals Christians and Muslims. I have also heard it from Atheists! Some quick thoughts for now and we can expand on them later if you wish.
Atheism is a lack of belief in the existence of God(s). I am not denying that one or more may exist but I…[Read more]
