@Unseen By your logic, we may as well just call everything a “Solar System Object” and be done with it. On the other hand, if you line up all of the original 9 planets and had to pick one that doesn’t fit, I’m fairly sure most people would pick pluto because of it’s weird orbit and inability to clear its orbit of debris. Earth would also be a good…[Read more]

GM, you must be willfully trying to misunderstand, there’s no other explanation.
In all three of your points you refer to gun murders. @unseen, and subsequently @steveinco and I, keep referring to OVERALL murder rates as @unseen did in the original post.
I’ll admit the title of this post is misleading because it says murder-by-gun statistics…[Read more]

I know the [poisoning the well] fallacy well enough to understand…
No…you’ve gotten this fallacy wrong as well..but in this case completely wrong.

Belle Rose wrote:I think @Unseen it all depends on what part of the country you’re talking about. I’ll tell you right now that there IS a HUGE correlation of gun ownership and murder rate in New Mexico. Without question.
And there’s an even closer correlation in a household where there’s been a gun homicide. I’m talking big picture not local picture.

@Unseen I nodded when I saw this just now…
Then I realized the blue bars are “homicides by firearm” for the countries. In other words this flies in the face of what his study actually claims (as opposed to what he has insisted it proves, instead)… unless I am misunderstanding the definition of “homicide.”

Even aside from the ownership rates (which can be difficult to pin down, as I mentioned quite some time ago) this chart shows the level of gun restrictions doesn’t have much to do with homicide rates either.
In Brazil, it’s generally illegal to carry a gun outside the home (if Wikipedia is to be believed)–so if there’s any correlation…[Read more]

I don’t know. My statistics were about homicides and I suspect didn’t include accidents.

@Unseen, I’m going to try to move this question over to the AZ Group (first time, thank you for allowing me to experiment on you muahaha)

Sorry. I’m getting old and am still having trouble parsing the question. LOL
So, I guess the answer is “I don’t know” for now.

There’s no denying knives have an important role to play in self defense. (If I hadn’t realized this, I would not have bothered with that class. Unfortunately, they never offered a follow up class for that one. I still want to get that Chris Reeve knife the instructor recommended someday.) However I tend to think at bad-breath…[Read more]

To Do or not To Do 10 years, 10 months ago@Unseen, so I can have an ad hominem dog bite? I know it’s an extreme, I’m using it to test your basis of definition.
I actually understand the term “ad hominem attack”. It’s when you attack the person rather than the subject matter. I think we’re all good with that, and it makes sense.
I’m still a bit perplexed over ‘ad hominem fallacy”. Is…[Read more]
