I have often wondered what it would be like to live the unfettered life of a butterfly. Does a butterfly have self-doubt, worry, guilt, or regret? It seems not. Similarly, a dog’s life might be agreeable; whose greatest concern might be, when will his companion arrive home with something to eat. Does a butterfly or a dog have a consciousness? It i…[Read more]

“– you still haven’t said what it is that is changing: what property or aspect of consciousness goes up or down a continuum. Do you mean, more or less consciously aware, seen, known, identified, thought about.”

In the above example, I have just listed half a dozen states of (changing) awareness = consciousness.
Yes, I mean, more or less con…[Read more]

“- I feel this idea is confused, because you haven’t said what defines one level as being different from another. “Lower” or “higher” in what way?”

Ok, good point; please allow me to clarify.

Think of a pond in your backyard. As you step in the level will go up, but will change to a lower level when you remove your wet foot. As well, the level…[Read more]

“As for bacterial consciousness, that’s a bit too far back for me to connect with.”

Its not that really far back…yes my model suggest countless levels that go back to the original quantum particles that we are evolved from but…

Perhaps connect this way…let me ask you the same question I asked Simon Paynton…

At what stage does a sperm a…[Read more]

It is not that I want consciousness to have “levels”…there just are observable levels. It is a subjective observation, and it is useful only in that it allows us to view what we are not usually aware of, other than in our minds eye.

“I can see that there are levels of conscious awareness”

And I see that you agree too…

so now look a little…[Read more]

Its all conjecture but I think my “levels of consciousness” theory holds some merit philosophers are not picking up on. We, however, might argue about the definition of consciousness. I take a broader philosophical view:
“the mental faculties as characterized by thought, feelings, and volition”
“the state of being awake and aware of one’s…[Read more]

Amen to that Mr. Simon Paynton…I like your way of thinking….
I think the ideas you put forth might be explained by the nature of consciousness…

    equating it with free will:
Consciousness is expressed by our biology at different levels. Have you ever noticed that the internal conversation has a loud voice, and an unheard voice? The unheard v…[Read more]

Atheist are just willing to accept the nature of the universe. The Laws of Physics dictate reality and not our hallucinations or wishful thinking; resurrection or re-animation, unassisted flight (ascension), reincarnation, virgin birth, a personal God…these are things of delusion; of make-believe…

Ideas approaching a greater understanding of…[Read more]

I wrote that as my exorcism after our families thanksgiving get-together; where my niece handed out Bible verses for everyone to read after dinner… I read mine like a champ (chump) and then needed to expel my demons…
It came directly from my bible studies (know thy enemy) :/

… engaging the frontal cortex (thinking logically) reduces anxiety. Perhaps this is to do with how picking up factual information reduces ignorance of the unknown.

I would agree with that. I would add that thinking illogically also reduces anxiety: blind faith serves the same purpose. Unfortunately, disinformation and maintaining ones i…[Read more]

Do you think that human primates are/were any more alert to danger than other species of animals?

We had a common ancestor: a cousin that survived because of that trait…my guess is that this organism might have looked fish-like before it had the amount of neurons necessary to make cognitive predictions. I would bet that the trait developed w…[Read more]

Speaking of anxiety; think for a second about the life of our common ancestor Lucy, three million years ago. She was diminutive and weak, compared to other primates at the time: she had no claws, no vicious teeth and soft, easily damageable skin. Her body hair was disappearing: looking like she was going through a case of mangy,…[Read more]

    A LETTER TO GOD
    Dear God,
I know you are very busy: your inbox must be quite full of prayers. Luckily you do the “all knowing”, telepathic thing, so not all people have to write you…because five billion sheets of copy paper; that would form a stack 306 miles high, is a bit tough to get through in any day. Considering there are around two trill…[Read more]
