I agree emotions do play a role in morality because we are not Vulcans.A belief in determinism helps one to leave emotion out of decisions because a determinist isn’t thinking in terms of praise and blame. His behavior will be more in terms of fixing things.

Artificial Intelligence 1 year, 5 months ago...We need emotions and consequences to govern us morally. Rationality can guide us up some weird paths……
I would suggest the converse of that is true.

Here is ChatGPT (the plain vanilla version) showing us what Cellini’s Perseus would look like if created by H.R. Giger. BTW, I simply asked it to convert the image to jpg format for saving and it did it for me. While it’s a cool image, it doesn’t display any knowlege of Greek mythology. The head should be the head of Medusa full of writhing snakes.

Artificial Intelligence 1 year, 5 months agoThe Categorical Imperative could be considered a foundational principle of morality. It is grounded in the belief that moral actions must be guided by rationality and universalizable principles, rather than emotions or consequences. I don’t really see what it wrong with that. It emphasizes the inherent dignity of every individual. Moral actions a…[Read more]

Due to prior commitments and a busier than normal work schedule, I have to regrettably skip my regular Sunday School post this week.

In other words, does absurdity place a limit on infinity? It does for me. Sean Carroll, physicist producer of the Mindscape podcast (who strikes me as brilliant) believes in the infinite universe outcome of random quantum wave collapses.
If I’m wording that reasonably well? The theory is that a universe splits into two universes,…[Read more]

I used ChatGPT 4o (“Four with lower case ‘o’). It has DALL-E built in but will create any image directly from the normal input window. I have the paid version (about $20 pm I think). I usually use this site to convert to jpeg.

Cunk is a fascinating combination of a comedian, performance artist, and skeptical philosopher.

The first interview, the brief bit about an infinite number of universes, got me thinking. Would there be no limit at all on what an infinite universe might realize. Can we, for example, countenance a universe in which there’s an Earth populated beings all of whom are either Mickey Mouse or Daisy Duck? In other words, does absurdity place a limit…[Read more]

Wow Cunk is annoying. Why would anyone consent to an interview with her?In case that’s a serious question: 1) The interviewees don’t know who she is; 2) I’ll bet you don’t like Borat, either!
I love them both, but I think I understand why a lot of people don’t.

Artificial Intelligence 1 year, 5 months agoAn hour-long video created by AI and if one defines creativity in terms of giving you a plethora of gorgeous imagery you’ve never seen or imagined before, this AI is more creative than any human visual artist.

Artificial Intelligence 1 year, 6 months agoIt reads like a machine….because it is a machine. TBH, when I debate anything with it, I sometimes have to remind myself of that fact.
The basics of human morality are easy to understand and I think the presentation here is accurate. Yes, we can argue about individual cases and how different groups treat various scenarios but morality is…[Read more]
