    @Jakelafort

    My prediction right now, Please Lord May I be wrong: he is pretty much going to lie steal and cheat in every possible way, and use his money and power and connections to fudge the numbers and rig the system to get reelected. He’s going to use the post office as a weapon, and just because people of color will vote for Kamala Harris, d…[Read more]

    @Jakelafort

    You were looking at the situation with an old-school mentality, the problem is the old rules don’t apply anymore. There might be some people that switch over to Joe Biden that voted for Trump before, but in the places where it really counts for the electoral college, I just don’t see it. They might not like trump anymore, but I don…[Read more]

    It’s officially started:

    This white woman Trump supporter on Facebook has this video that’s going viral about how she stepped into a place to vote and they told her she was registered as a Democrat and couldn’t vote.

    So this is what they’re going to do is make people think that somehow the voting isn’t fair…That’s just one of many things…

    &nbs…[Read more]

    @jakelafort

    There were plenty of other women of color that would have been FAR less controversial. You have to realize that there are a LOT of people in this country who will believe almost anything Trump says.

    again I was really rooting for her. But I think he could have done a lot better. There are plenty of women of color he could have chosen…[Read more]

  • @jakelafort – Is there anything in the 14th amendment that prohibits an anonymous federal force from picking random citizens off the streets or am I am I confusing this with another law? It is almost as if habeas corpus has been suspended in parts of Portland.

    @jakelafort, I’m sorry about the accident.  I was on a very dark country road a number of years ago – no street lights and no moon and no stars!  It was very dark, and I ran over an armadillo and felt terrible.  When I read that, I had flashbacks!

    @jakelafort,  Fair enough. My bad… one of the challenges with the hypothetical (including my elimination of religion in 2200 CE). At least we can evaluate if the logic is cogent. If I was born, say, in Iran to a typical Islamic family,  does it follow that I would be a committed,  practicing, faith-defending Muslim? Place of birth being ra…[Read more]

    If I follow, @jakelafort, you are accusing all theistic faiths with the promotion and support of slavery, rape, and racism. Am I following your line of argument?

    Assuming no god then, why not categorize such human practices, along with our currently embraced systems that support such practices (specifically the man made religious systems that…[Read more]

    @jakelafort – the term “genetic fallacy” is simply the name of the fallacy.  In checking the internet a little, it apparently came from a 1934 text entitled, “An Introduction to Logic and Scientific Method”.  It’s just a name.  Also, standing adamantly against slavery, drunk drivers, rapists, racists is different than standing adamantly ag…[Read more]

    @jakelafort, Jake, you are funny! Please continue to use your colorful adjectives- it’s what you believe… woops… KNOW to be true. Like you, I am an “atheist” too, right? Regarding Osiris, Marduke,  Apsu, Tiamat, Enlil, Ahura Mazda, Gilgamesh’s supreme God Anu,  as well as Zeus, Apollo,  and all the rest… if I met someone who seriously wo…[Read more]

    @jakelafort, Yes I was raised in church.  Not sure how much you know about black church culture, but I was in a small church outside of Washington DC.  As a high school student (way back before the Internet) I had questions and so I did something novel – I went to the library and looked things up!  I wouldn’t have put it this way back then, but I…[Read more]

    Thanks @jakelafort, I was responding to the question from @robert. I agree… no state established religion in the US, and all the ancillary implications therein.

    @davis, I too despise the “poison of religion”, and some of what you meant by that phrase I would agree with wholeheartedly but obviously not all. Also, I really don’t care if a bicycle…[Read more]

  • It drives me crazy when I hear Pastors promote such things and make inappropriate and theologically unsound connections to nationalism.

    Great to hear that. It is one of the reasons many of us atheists are anti-theists (not anti theist, as @Jakelafort said). They are only too happy to parade their “acts of righteousness” before others and I…[Read more]

    Ivy – @asianne, I really don’t know.  I have participated in presidential elections since Ronald Reagan vs President Jimmy Carter.  However, this is truly the first time I am voting for the proverbial “lesser of two evils”, and that would be Joe Biden.  Yet, I don’t really know.  The electorate have already shocked the pollster over and over aga…[Read more]

  • @jakelafort I laughed out loud when you said “hate the sin, not the sinners” tuchet! And thank you for the explanation of the mirror neurons and your take on and evolutionary case for the development of empathy. I recall reading about this somewhere but I don’t recall.  I think we may need to start a new thread to continue.  You brought up some g…[Read more]

  • @jakelafort, I clearly think slavery is wrong.  I clearly think all of those other things are wrong.  My question wasn’t searching to find out if such things are wrong.  My question was simply looking for a non-religious foundation for it being wrong.  I’m not sure what my future holds, but I hope to encourage more peace in the world in my own lit…[Read more]

  • @jakelafort – we are, in essence, saying the same thing.  The “test” is how PEOPLE operate.  Philosophical constructs don’t do anything.  Sure, they may help a person justify their actions in their own psyche, but it’s people who act.  You guys (Reg, Robert, and yourself) seem to be trying to pick a fight with me – but I’m just trying to find out…[Read more]

  • @Jakelafort I have some vague memory of him prognosticating or hoping for a gradual emancipation.

    Yes, I remember thinking that too at some point.
