Critique of post-modernist thought has actually been around for a while. Especially after the Sokal affair. Post-modernism is a huge family of activity ranging from post-modern arts (especially art and literature) and related affairs (architecture etc), post-modern philosophy and a post-modern approach to the humanities. I can say that in the…[Read more]

Wokeism is rehashed Postmodernism and Cultural Marxism.
Eco. You don’t have the slightest clue what wokeism is, what postmodernism is or what cultural marxism is if you honestly stand by that claim. I find myself more and more finding it really difficult to take 95% of what you say seriously. Consider educating yourself on the things you discuss…[Read more]

Humanism 5 years agoSo yes, you’ve changed too much at this point. With the additional conditions you’ve attached to the question, I don’t really find it an interesting question is all I’m saying.
This is the only way to approach the problem deontologically (and at this point we were discussing only my deontological answer…not my various other answers). In a deont…[Read more]

Humanism 5 years agoWhat would be wrong with having a picnic on somebody’s grave?
Ivy, imagine the worst happened and say, your son passed away (sorry to make you imagine the unimaginable). And then you go to visit the grave and you see a bunch of high school students and one of their pet dogs having a picnic on top of his little grave, eating sandwiches and d…[Read more]

Humanism 5 years agoGravesites are real property
Yes totally. For some moral systems, the fact that the grave is private property is enough of a reason to brand the activity immoral.

Humanism 5 years agoI think you’ve now added enough new values to the scenario that this has substantially strayed from the original question.
No I don’t agree. How you approach any problem in deontological ethics is contingent on the laws you’ve formulated and how you apply them. I don’t see the value in formulating a law over “is it wrong to have a picnic on a s…[Read more]

Humanism 5 years agoDifferent norms (benefit/harm; respecting the dead; etc.) can clash or have different goals or structures.
This is certainly the case but I don’t think this would invalidate the rule. I mean, if suddenly a large number of people started getting upset if I used the words “marble, pickle and mirror” in the same sentence…I wouldn’t go out of my way…[Read more]

Humanism 5 years agoI think the possibility of hurting or upsetting other people is significant enough to make an easily avoidable pointless activity one I wouldn’t do. If there are 1,000,000 equally good places to picnic and I instead choose 1 location where my activity could potentially hurt/upset a person, with no added value to doing it there…I think it’s a…[Read more]

Humanism 5 years agoI would agree with you Kristina. But this is a deontological moral law. So it is always relative to the person to frames the law (even if they will that others also follow that law). In that sense, if you do have a good reason to challenge it then the law wouldn’t follow. Since I cannot for the life of me think of a reason why having a picnic on…[Read more]

Humanism 5 years agoI understand the resistance to saying: yes it is immoral or no it is not. Because it is a difficult one to defend (not because it is necessarily relative). It seems the general answer here is: it is in bad taste.
However I do believe it is immoral in some moral systems. Deontological, utilitarian or virtue ethics to name just three (though it…[Read more]

Actually some of the most hilarious jokes are ones about a nation of people that have few, if any negative stereotypes like Canadians or the Finnish. They end up being super bland jokes that could apply to anyone (say if they were about the cold weather in those countries). Even funnier is when shows come along and just invent jokes. South Park…[Read more]

First you had Simon hyper generalising about woke people, and now Eco is doing it. Eco…consider laying off of the stereotypes. Woke people cover a very broad spectrum of people who use a variety of tools to cut down on harmful speech.
Woke people can even include university jock frat boys who call out their friends when they make rape-jokes or…[Read more]

European nations have a model that works. USA does not.
Let’s not forget: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, Barbados (and that’s only to name first world countries). Even some second world countries have reasonable health systems where everyone is covered (such as Chile and Kazakhstan).
Basically every…[Read more]

Enco you really are an expert at taking an over-all comparison and then trying to poke tiny holes in the better example, ignore or gloss over the huge holes in the lesser example and then somehow come out on the winning side. And the little holes that you poke become more and more ridiculous and desperate it is impossible to take you seriously.…[Read more]

Sunday School 5 years agoSimon I think you have to modify your definition.
A well rounded mentally stable athlete who is a communist would fit that definition (takes care of themselves over the long term [fitness and self-care] and connects with something greater than themselves [a political ideology]) and yet that just doesn’t automatically seem spiritual to me. You can…[Read more]

LOL Reg. That sounds hilarious. I can imagine an old Madras granny making a high quality dhosa in Ireland and having it drone shipped to a rugged Irish island. That would pretty much define globalisation.

Having said all of that, I do have to admit the New York/Boston/Chicago/Eastern-Canada version of Pizza (a totally utterly different dish in my opinion) is still not bad. There was something memorable about having one of those thick crust and a shit ton of cheese on top pizzas from a good pizza place. Zheesh two slices alone is an entire meal. I’d…[Read more]

Yeah Neapolitan pizza is pretty heavy with a strong sauce. My friend from there told me that a lot of Italians actually don’t like it. It’s fantastic but I actually preferred the pizza in Sicily (in fact with literally every single national dish I and my friend thought everything in Sicily was superior for some unknown reason. In fact it was my…[Read more]

There are many countries I visited where you could easily have the food, just as good in a decent restaurant in some other country. I found there were three big exceptions. Some Indian food was not the same anywhere else (especially street samosas and dhosas). The second was Italian (just about everything, but including gelatti, fried panzerotti,…[Read more]
