Gary BergeronParticipantOn the article: Why Politics Could Destroy White Churches.
From the article: “If young people are the future of the church, it’s hard to see how both white Catholics and white evangelicals can effectively reach out to the younger generations when their politics become further and further polarized.”
Young people are moving away from religion, not only because of the absurdities of religion, but because of religious politics. The quote above succinctly shines on a glaring fact: There is, or should be, a separation of church and state. The founding fathers of the Constitution of the United States knew very well that when religion and government couple, the government tends to degrade religion and at the same time, religion tends to destroy the government. They thought keeping them separate would protect both from abuse.
How correct they were!

Gary BergeronParticipantThe article on St. Joseph Orphanage was a tough read, given that I went through a small but terrifying incedent myself. ( A nun slapped me ). Everytime I think about that witch, I thank her. That slap opened my eyes and mind. I’m taking info from FFRF and I’m going to strip my name from the membership list of the RCC. Free at last, free at last, thank the mighty stars I am free at last! ( Apologies to MLK ). 🙂

Gary BergeronParticipantThe “War on Christmas” brings back a memory every year now.
Back in 1968, I was 10 yrs. old. My mother, her sister, and my grandmother would pool the little money they had to buy a box of assorted Christmas cards. It was my job to hand out the cards and enjoyed looking at the pictures. My favorite ones were the kids sledding down snowy hills; We didn’t get snow down in Louisiana. The other pictures had “Season’s Greetings”, “Happy Holiday”, “Have a joyous season”. Other cards had Jesus and the Mother Mary. Merry Christmas, and all that.
Now, my family were devout Christians. Raging Catholics. Bottles of Holy Water, blessed medals of all the saints, and framed pictures of Jesus everywhere!….No outrage. There wasn’t : “Oh! Look Iola! This one says Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas!”….Nothing. Perhaps their faith was strong and today faith is paper thin or it could be that we live in a 500 channel universe with a prominent social media?
I like Christmas. I get to get drunk with friends! 🙂

Gary BergeronParticipant@ StevelnCO, yes it is a good article. Christians seem to lack the ability to understand the damage they do at times. It is like they have no emotional awareness of how their words and acts affect others. It is because “religion poisons everything” that their sense of empathy is warped. Many see the suffering of others as something that will be rewarded in the future rather than needing action now.
“Why religion is losing” was familiar territory for moi….
When I was 11 yrs. old, I asked a question to a catholic nun after catechism class and her answer was a very hard, roundhouse, coming from wayyyy back there, slap on the face. If a desk had not been on my left side, I would have hit the floor.
This woman remains in my mind as the meanest person I’ve ever known….but, I’m thankful every day for that slap…because it opened my mind and I began to question the catholic church and it’s practices.
Thank you, Sister Annabel…-

Gary BergeronParticipantIf Pluto is a planet, then so is Eris, which is more massive than Pluto.
Are there other bodies out there as massive or more massive than Eris? Possibly so.
The IAU made new interpretations on what is a planet:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IAU_definition_of_planetI have a nostalgic urge to think of Pluto as a planet, but the science guys have a better argument…
