I ask theists ‘stupid questions’, like my shoe question above, so that they will have to focus on the other questions I have asked about the 72 virgins. I find such distracting questions can start a ‘Socratic Method’ conversation as the theist is compelled to explain what I am really asking him about, in order to show me the irrelevance of my shoe question. When they are forced to explain the details, the absurdity of their actual beliefs can become apparent to them.

Jewish people tend to be liberal in their attitudes (liberal in the sense Strega used it – not Orthodox) and are progressives on the core issues of civil rights for all citizens, more open to immigration and strongly support the separation of Church and State. These policies align more with traditional Democratic Party values and may be of more concern to them than GOP support for Israel.

One of my best friends in San Francisco is a rabbi, 82, still sharp as a tack and involved daily with the community. My experience with him is just anecdotal, but he fits the form you’ve outlined perfectly. He’s politically progressive, cares about all people and strives to have meaningful, two-way conversations with all of them. He finds ways to learn from other people every day.

He views Trump as a serious threat, and Israeli politics moving to the right has also troubled him.
