Sunday School 7 years, 3 months agoThe atheist moniker for me is more like a rebellious tattoo than an overall identity. (Hmm, speaking of which I don’t like that rebellious has two Ls in it.)

Like I said, consciousness may simply be an accident. One that happened to certain beings on the planet, or maybe just to you. That’s reasonable, or at least I’d say a long series of accidents that were selected by evolution to live on in genes. Life itself was shaped that way, in uncountable series’ of uncountable accidents and…[Read more]

If you really want to doubt, how can you be sure that you are conscious of anything real at all?I’m not well learned in philosophy, so my opinions will often be relatively uninformed. That said…

Notable Atheists 7 years, 4 months agoThanks Reg, that is a good article with good links, including one to the book. I’ll steal another link from there to a video on the famous and only meeting the four had together:

Likewise with bestiality and necrophilia… the real issue (for me at least) is that there is not, and can never be, informed consent. It took a second reading to hit me: Is it really necessary to get consent from a dead person?

Short digression, finally got me a decent phone, but still learning tweaks like how to stop it from feeding audible alerts to me, especially during sleeping hours, like when I accidentally set the sleep time for podcasts to 75 hours instead of 75 minutes, and so I’m alerted and wake up in the middle of a loooong Joe Rogan and Sam Harris discussion…[Read more]

I lean toward A’s self-defense, also thinking longer term wrt considering how B might treat the rest of the world after defeating A. Meanwhile, for scenarios like this and lesser dire, I’m in favor of designing weapons that aren’t so indiscriminant, and are more precise in their targeting. I include AI/drone weapons in this category, for as long…[Read more]

If I could hide it easily, I would.
For the sake of editorial transparency, I’m just documenting here how I exercise my stated Consciousness group policy to edit and curate posts and/or topics when I feel it furthers the interest of the group, and furthers the group’s usefulness as a resource to non-group…[Read more]

Consciousness 7 years, 4 months agoI agree with y’all. Funny how this only seems important to me now, at 65 years old. Answers to whys can be so cloaked in mystery, wonder, and feelings, and the hows are just textbook, pedantic, and require work. Mysteries and dramas are more fun, at least in a group setting like an audience or congregation. Just add fairy dust for the shared…[Read more]

Consciousness 7 years, 4 months agoSo here is where that word “why” bugs me:
In Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness (1995), Chalmers wrote (copy/pasted from wikipedia):
It is undeniable that some organisms are subjects of experience. But the question of how it is that these systems are subjects of experience is perplexing. Why is it that when our cognitive systems engage i…

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Genius Edward Witten, could he help intensify artificial intelligence research? in the forum Small Talk 7 years, 4 months ago
I’ll think y’all are expecting AI to have drives or motives, which it may indeed be said to have someday. But before that day comes, I’ll say again, I feel increasingly certain that powerful AI will be designed and owned by humans that implant their own drives and motives into it. If and when AI goes rogue, as it were, it will most likely be…[Read more]

Viruses are like any other life form. All we do is live and reproduce and try to stop ourselves being killed. Everything else we do is fluff to keep us occupied whilst we live and reproduce and try to stop ourselves being killed.
Its what makes ‘heaven’ so futile. No death, no reproduction, nothing at all that generates adrenaline. Not sure I…[Read more]

AI that exceeds human intelligence will happen. The only question in my mind is who’s interests will it serve? An aggressive nation-state that designs and owns it? An oligarchy? Technocracy? Its cadre of inventors? Glossy-eyed programmer idealists with their own plan for the future?
