it becomes a delusion when people think that their mind or consciousness will exist even after their brain dies.
There’s nothing inherent in the concept of free will that says that that will must survive, disembodied, after death.
Rather, I suspect it’s people who believed in an afterlife already who decided later on to make the claim that…[Read more]

@Matt, yes I do.
That makes it simple to convert between the two.
Converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius is much more complicated because not only are the zero points different, the size of the degree is, as well.
There is (was, really) a scale starting at absolute zero but sized in Fahrenheit degrees (where the difference between freezing and…[Read more]

_Robert_, good catch. I didn’t really notice what GM called it.
It has fourteen stars, yet IIRC the confederacy was eleven states (VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, TN, MS, AR, LA, and TX). I believe they were claiming at the time that MO, KY and MD had been illegally prevented from seceding, so that would be where the 14 comes from.

It makes sense to fly it over a Civil War battlefield, but only if the US flag is flown there as well. (In fact, it’d be even better if the US flag of the time were flown there. It’s still legal to use any old US flag design.) It has a tie to the history of the battlefield.
To answer the question you are probably at least as interested in, I…[Read more]

However, representing the rational and intellectual viewpoint with vitriol and fowl language
But what other kind of language, besides “fowl” will such birdbrains understand?
(Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.)

Heat is simply the average kinetic energy of the molecules of the substance. OK, or -459F or -273C (I dropped fractions because I don’t remember them) is the temperature where the kinetic energy is zero, of course you can’t get less than that.
Because only kelvins shows a linear relationship between heat and the number on the scale, it’s…[Read more]

@Unseen this can be mitigated by doing @ signs like I just did.
We had one frequent user who simply *would not* use the threads properly, and her replies would end up at the bottom. So threading isn’t a cure all.
One advantage to NOT threading is it’s easy to go to the first unread comment, then just keep reading, With a threaded post, they…[Read more]

I’ve noticed that if you just try to go to thinkatheist.com, you get redirected. But a link to a spot inside T|A seems to work for me. Then one can navigate around.
http://www.thinkatheist.com/forum/topics/new-site?Topic%3A1540650&page=6#comments
From there you should be able to navigate to unseen’s discussion, assuming that link works for…[Read more]

the bible is ALL they have. Some of them just don’t realize it’s full of shit
That’s pretty damn succinct. In fact, there’s probably some rule out there against such short posts. 😛
Seriously? In 99% of the cases, you’ve nailed it.

Preferably a plugin that is active in its own tab for desktop browsers (rather than lying on top of other content on all tabs–that caused horrific slowdowns if you had multiple tabs open though I think they might have fixed that recently)

Well at least some of the time, the less clueless ones will try to demonstrate that the Bible is such a remarkable book that only Dog could have written it.
But I suspect you’re really asking after the true circular argument of the form:
SteveInCO deserves all your money because every part of this sentence is true.
Where, of course, they…[Read more]
