Jake I really like that conclusion – that a devout Christian, by definition cannot be the best version of themselves.

Religion is legalized fraud. With so many conflicting religions, society has agreed that it’s OK to be deceitful, just this once.

It enables all sorts of other shady practices (some that we call “woo”).

Reg if it is not too much trouble would you post the 50 terrible things?

    Thanks.

Science and Religion are non- overlapping magisteria.

That’s why a scientist is free to believe in God if they want.  Now, as things stand in religion, things can get very illogical very fast.  A biologist is not going to take Genesis literally – the two are factually incompatible.  But Genesis can be taken for a creation myth that might or might not speak to people.

Once again Simon can you tell me anything useful to society that religion has given us in the last 500 years?

Religion can operate as a compassionate “conscience” of society.

Do I need to again post the 50 terrible things Jesus commanded?

But people are rightly going to ignore those, as unhealthy and too harsh or whatever.  They probably wouldn’t lead to long term well being.

Simon, there are 20 Epicureans at my front door. What should I do? 🙂

    Break out the special cakes?

Thanks Reg. Good stuff for a theist who idolizes Jesus to come across.

Religion can operate as a compassionate “conscience” of society.

Religious people, like all people, can show compassion, but how many times has that compassion been necessary to counteract the xenophobia, misogyny, and barbarity also present within their own religion and ranks?  It’s difficult to see what the religion itself really provides that falls outside of ordinary human behaviour.

Being part of an organization, perhaps, can lead to more structured charitable giving and acts. And this can include being part of a religious congregation. But then, the quality of that charity is also something to be taken into account.
