Before pubs, in the middle ages or whatever, there were ale houses run by individuals who may have been brewing their own beer…
God made Guinness. Guinness drinkers make beer. Beer drinkers make lager.
An Irishman, an Englishman and an American walk into an Irish pub for the first time. The fronkey farmer raises his hand to the barman with 3…[Read more]

@ PopeBeanie
Well, here’s one you can watch because iot’s official. It’s their collab with Band Maid:
Like many Japanese bands, the level of musicianship they have is just insane. TW can’t compare on that level. Their forte is in their songwriting. Thus, I think the song was largely written by…[Read more]

I got to watch half of it before it got blocked. I hope whoever hosted the venue posts more of their shows, but they didn’t post a lot from 2023. I don’t know why. Edit:…[Read more]

@ Simon
I think originally a pub was an establishment run by a brewery as a way of marketing its products. So, if you went to an ABC Brewery pub, you wouldn’t have a choice of various ABC products. Was it that way and is it still that way in today’s pubs?

A couple observations on some cultural difference between the UK and the USA from comparing their mystery/detective series with American cop shows.
First, almost invariable when UK cops visit someone while gathering information, they are offered tea or tea and biscuits. Even substituting coffee for tea, that never happens in American…[Read more]

Sunday School 1 year, 11 months agoWhat would count as a physical explanation of consciousness, anyway?
It seems to me that consciousness is an epiphenomenon of the brain and there must be some correlations between physical entities and consciousness but that it can’t be a simple one.
When you’re put under general anesthesia you literally lose your mind for the duration and I’m…[Read more]

Sunday School 1 year, 11 months agoOne of the things people wrongly assume about evolution (including not just critics but some proponents) is that the theory is supposed to account for everything. That if something is there, it’s there due to evolution and natural selection.
The truth, I believe, is that what natural selection is good for is for over time gradually eliminating…[Read more]

The Olympics are named after Mount Olympus, home of the Greek Gods. Dionysus, the god of wine-making should be given kudos by Catholics, who created the very wine they need in order to be able to drink the blood of their Jesus. (See also first long read below).

When Trump loses, and he will, his appearance at a conference of black journalists will be cited as the day his campaign irrevocably collapsed.
Totally flustered by Biden withdrawing and letting Kamala Harris assume the role of presumptive nominee, he’s at wit’s end and is letting The Really Really Dark Donald out on full display. I think that…[Read more]

Politics 1 year, 11 months agoI wish to understand how cults and extreme movements manifest. I see more anger and hate in social media than ever before. I’m seeing people say, with confidence, authoritarianism would be better than the current “permissive society that’s ruining America”. The threat to democracy is real, wrapped in an American flag, and carried by Christian…[Read more]
