What Reg said. I cannot understate enough how much of a petty attention seeking douchebag Musk is. He has written no shortage of odd, vile, slanderous, manipulate and creepy tweets. Best thing anyone could do is delete their twitter. I did years ago after having the misfortune of handling the social media for a few departments. The world would be…[Read more]

Yeay…Twitter can become an even more grotesque platform of brazen disinformation spreading, hate and a platform for Trump to overthrow the government. It is a win for everyone!!! What can go wrong with one person being in control of a monolithic database of everyone’s data with virtually no regulation or oversight!?!?!?

PopeBeanie started the topic Fighting Trumpism and Single Party Takeovers in the forum
Politics 4 years, 2 months ago(This topic can be made broader than what the title indicates, with Populism, Nationalism, Authoritarianism, and Oligarchs on the rise around the world. E.g. Macron’s re-election is a pleasant exception. Even if you’ve already seen these news pieces, I consider some of these “iconic” to the Trump Era.)

Enco your comparisons of Putin’s war mongering with limited and highly specific and carefully applied hate-laws is ridiculous and tiresome. Try another strategy or perhaps even concede something, even just a little, like once a year or two. It is actually liberating to admit once in a while you can rethink something.

I agree, this is the clearest presentation on particles I’ve seen to date. But I think researching this kind of “pure science” often does lead to further, useful invention.

I was looking for a good place to cite the following science & medicine story without starting a new topic, and this here topic seems appropriate, even if just as another brief reminder of the monumentalness of science & medicine. Side note, mention was made about how the vaccine will contribute to herd immunity. This has been overstated many…[Read more]

Who’s August? LOL
I’m super sorry Autumn for referring to you as August. I apologise!!!!

Yes August, I remember when the requirement to have a luxury stereo system in your car came out, I tried to skirt the law by ordering a cheap one from Taiwan without multiple CD changers and terrible base quality. Eventually the police pulled me over because my tail lights were off. They noticed my sub standard stereo system and I got a €2000 f…[Read more]

Fellow Unbelievers, Here’s a story that highlights the peril of government outlawing Misinformation/Disinformation/Malinformation. Again, be careful what you wish for: Russia:
No one here appears to be advocating for any legislation, policy, or practice to that effect.Oh but you speak too soon Autumn. The goal of anyone who advocates for highly s…[Read more]

Is that a slippery slope argument? Maybe, but the slippery slope argument, treated as leading to a conclusion with necessity is surely fallacious, but treated as a warning of a potential risk, as a temptation that would be easy to give into, there’s nothing fallacious about it.
There is no maybe about your slippery slope, and your suppositions a…[Read more]

Again with the slippery slope shit Unseen. I’m not engaging in slippery slope arguments. Yes, harm is relative. Hate speech laws are not geared towards people whose feeling are hurt over a rude opinion. They are geared towards protecting vulnerable groups from the most extreme hate-speech. Please stop the slippery slope nonsense.
If you can…[Read more]

As I’ve said, allowing the government to decide what you can read, watch, hear, see, or believe allows any government to do it, not just a government enforcing your ideas
You act as though there is any single country in the world which doesn’t have at least some measures banning books, videos or expressing certain ideas. Even in the US, the a…[Read more]

Yeah and school bullying has always been around, and since my father’s generation something is slowly being done about it, with many people going “that’s just the way kids are”, while the victims are more able to trust adults to do something as they are relentlessly terrorised. Abusive environments that threaten someone’s well being, opportunities…[Read more]

Who decides what we may say, see, and hear? What are their qualifications? Do they need some sort of education or expertise?
And by what authority are such basic rights abridged? Should I assume you’d be happy with a censor who gives what the public thinks and believes no consideration whatsoever if that runs contrary to such a person’s val…

Enco, I have no problem with curtailing free speech for reasonable reasons (which by the way you also have no problem with). What we agree on are things like: libel, some degree of copyright, incitement of crime, causing a panic etc.
Where you seem to draw the line is with even the most virulent vicious bigoted hate speech which has been…[Read more]

About the use of AI in various decision making, I think it’s increasingly both useful, and risky. Ultimately, how AI is programmed and given credence will always depend on who owns and runs the AI… at least until AI is allowed — intentionally or accidentally — to take over completely, with no one able to control it or warn others about…[Read more]

A classic question for philosophy students is to ask them “OK, should we all go outside now and kill ourselves and if not, why not”. I think that question demands an answer.
It is actually very interesting how moral systems deal with suicide/euthanasia. I heavily question the Judaeo-Christian baggage left over even in our secular societies tha…[Read more]
