Guilt-driven death cult. I like it.

Dang, what an upbringing! I can’t imagine what itt must have been like to plunge into 20th century America’s schooling system without knowing about their religion. Up until then, how did your parents handle Christmas and Easter?

Physter I don’t think I can imagine what it was like to come from a fundamentalist background and arrive at atheism. Did things just drift away from reality for you, or was there a radical awakening?
I had categorized God and Santa together, and angels were grown up fairies when I was a child. When I stopped believing, I stopped believing in a…[Read more]

@bellerose Atheists just want to look like they have elite knowledge? Wow that’s a weird position to take! Is that really how you view all atheists? That’s a bit tragic really. When you thought you were an atheist, did that make you feel you had elite superiority?
Personally, I think all the god stuff is just bum fluff – I don’t think of it…[Read more]

Oddly, I think fear has a lot to do with the levels of religiosity any community might display. If you are in America, your first fear is that your health will not be protected. Many Americans live one accident/illness away from bankruptcy- an insidious fear that permeates everything and having a pal in authority, or praying to a god if you p…[Read more]

Hey Belle, you can cuss if it helps, we don’t redact text. obviously there needs to be a point in whatever you’re saying, but the odd expletive shouldn’t traumatize any members.
Blasphemy isn’t an atheist problem either 🙂
(personally, I think “Jesus fucking Christ” covers everything beautifully)

Its hard, with a label like “humanist” for anyone to claim they are against it! Anyone human, that is. Other than those who seriously believe in social superiority by birthright (racists, bigots, homophobes etc) pretty much everyone would agree on the humanist philosophy. The discord arises when they fail to bridge the gap between philosophy and action.

When I find out where Unseen is hidden, I’m going to put an inflatable rhino in his closet.
Youd better believe I’m serious!

@Simonpayton you mean because Belle now feels she has a personal relationship with the Creator of the Universe, she can ask him? She has stated on more than one occasion that she doesn’t subscribe to the normal earthly religions.

@dang. Simons atheism sort of includes Jesus. Not sure anyone except Simon understands that.

I’m with Dang on this. I also had zero indoctrination – in my case coupled a little later on, with an exploration of the divers religions and their accoutrements. When I was seventeen I was investigating Hinduism and went vegetarian to see what it was like. 17 months later, faced with a delicious-looking meat dish in Greece, I tucked in with gu…[Read more]

My niece has Asperger’s syndrome and she is super intelligent. She is the third generation of a family of unbelievers, so I can’t tell you her atheism is in any way connected, but as she contemplates stuff in a very focused way, I’m guessing we would have had difficulty getting her to bend the knee to a deity, should we ever have tried.

I agree, Unseen. I have an affirmative notion on the absence of gods. I disbelieve in them. The definition of atheism as simply an absence of belief in gods is the basic dictionary definition as translated from Latin. It doesn’t really encompass my atheism, nor apparently yours.
However, in London for example, most people genuinely don’t co…[Read more]

@DrBob. “We theists”? I don’t think you speak for the majority of theists. I certainly wouldn’t attempt to write, “we atheists” followed by anything except the dictionary definition of atheists.
I wish in some ways that you did speak for more than the slender channel of Christians with similar mindsets to you, but truthfully, that’s just not…[Read more]

Sunday School 8 years, 10 months ago@Belle. What if you heard your god telling you to kill your son? Would that be the point where you started to question your beliefs, or would you follow faithfully? It’s not as if it couldn’t happen. How certain are you that you will obey your god?

@simonpaynton yes, good call. I have a pitchfork (legacy from my satanist rituals I developed too much sloth over) which I might use on odd looking lumps in my garden.

Sunday School 8 years, 10 months agoIt’s kind of ironic that a poster complains that Reg was clumping ‘most christians’ together, whilst simultaneously clumping all Atheists together in the response.
