“Free thinker” is in a different context than the free will discussion. Or rather a different layer or level. Free thinking, I’d say, is on a surface layer. Whether we are really free or just feel free takes us down to the deepest level. People who argue for free will look at the top or intermediate levels and argue for mankind being what’s…[Read more]

Regarding the outcome of Rittenhouse’s trial. “Not guilty” or “Not proven”? And does it make a difference?
Also, as I noted above, “murder” has both legal and colloquial meanings, and colloquially murder can mean killing someone no matter the circumstances. So, was the NY Times describing his actions using a legal or a colloquial voice?

Sunday School 4 years, 3 months agoWhy not open a vegetarian discussion? I don’t see your points as having any bearing here other than as a distraction. I will argue that meat is the most natural protein source and that because of that, there is no real ethical issue with eating meat. You argue whatever the heck you want in support of eating beans.
Rather than sprinkle…[Read more]

Sunday School 4 years, 3 months agoYour first point suffers from the “tu quoque” fallacy. If your opponent is being hypocritical, that doesn’t disprove his argument. In a sense, tu quoque is a kind of “poisoning the well” fallacy, because it asks you to consider the source of the allegations not the allegations themselves.
As for your second point, there’s a lot of…[Read more]

@Jake Scots, Brits, Germans… Those are not races in the same way a black, Asian, or Native American is. My background is German, but when I look in the mirror I don’t see a German. When the nonwhite races look in the mirror they have to accept the fact that they are hyphenated and will be as long as they look the way they do.

Right now, the main animosity seems to be toward Asians, which I’m sure is Covid-related (as if the average Asian on the street had anything to do with it). Mostly, these are one-on-one attacks by solitary wackos, no ralllies or riots.

@Jake It’s much tougher to immigrate into America as a refugee than it is in many other countries, isn’t it?
Maybe this is why we don’t have anti-Muslim riots here.

@Jake But hey…at least you get to die of medical abandonment in “the best medical system on Earth” (according to Republicans).
I’m not really retired. I have a new job: To give whatever remains of my wealth to the best medical system on Earth.

@Jake Despite the Hypocratic Oath, many people die in America due to being unable to pay America’s inflated medical an prescription costs. If all you need is an antibiotic to treat an infection, there is likely a charitable clinic that’ll give you an appointment and some antibiotics. If you need a bypass, forget it. You’re a goner.

@Jake We often hear “We can’t be the world’s police” except when we are the world’s police.
There is a lot of genocide going on. How does one rank them in terms of importance? China is trying to stamp out a religion, so where do atheists stand? religious people wonder.
Some woke projects, like reversing climate change, require a nearly universal…[Read more]

There is now a separate Israel vs. Middle East discussion. I think your post above was intended for that discussion and not the one about War with China over Taiwan.

I seem to remember that it was Ralph Waldo Emerson (or maybe it was my Uncle Bob) who said that “Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” It’s differences that make one culture different from another. In Hinduism (which is a lot more than just a religion) you don’t eat beef. In Jewish culture you don’t eat pork or shellfish.
Yes, we…[Read more]
