Ridiculous Holy Books 4 years, 11 months agoI have read sections of the Quran over the years. The similarities between it and the Bible are numerous. The same can be said of The Torah which I think is the equivalent to the Pentateuch or at least the 5 books attributed to Moses. I have debated with Muslims too. Their arguments for the existence of their god and their faith are no d…[Read more]

Sunday School 4 years, 12 months agoThanks Robert, I don’t think it possible to talk anyone out of their beliefs, be those beliefs religious or conspiracy theories. My tactic is to take the “Socratic Method” approach and to keep asking them to explain what they believe. Not just what they believe but how they came to hold them and why do they assert that they are correct in holding…[Read more]

Reg the Fronkey Farmer replied to the topic The Christian Right is in decline and it’s taking America with it. in the forum
Politics 5 years agoThe reality is not that the Evangelicals are being attacked but that they are imploding. Their ranks are not being repopulated by their children because the younger generation sees that conservative beliefs are either to some degree racist, homophobic or anti-LGBTQ. They are too educated and have a much less insular view of the world than their…[Read more]

Politics 5 years agoThe following is an opinion piece from today’s New York Times by Michelle Goldberg.
The presidency of George W. Bush may have been the high point of the modern Christian right’s influence in America. White evangelicals were the largest religious faction in the country. “They had a president who claimed to be one of their own, he had a tes…[Read more]

I would not be laying any money on finding Jakelafort browsing books in the “religion” section 🙂 The odds of winning the lotto are better. But when I am browsing bookshops I tend to move a few atheist books to those shelves. Somewhere between “How I found Jesus” and “Learning to communicate with your Angel”. You never know……

No, I don’t consider them to be grifters. At least not “The 4 Horsemen”. When they spoke on their academic subjects and on the topic of atheism, they were the “New Atheists”. They brought it to the foreground as a viable option to consider and made it popular to the point where many people noticed “it is not just me”. It gave an accessible space…[Read more]

I thought this paragraph was good:
At the heart of this merger was the creation of a new religious movement of sorts centered around the felt loss of power among white men due to the empowerment of other people. When it was once acceptable, according to cultural norms, for men to sexually harass women with impunity, or make harmful racist and…[Read more]

“There’s way more evidence that God does exist than evidence that he doesn’t.’
Absolutely!
The bible is evidence, as is 2000 years of written testimony, personal accounts, tradition and even historical evidence (written after the fact)
If we accept that as consequential evidence, then we must accept that the book Dr…[Read more]
