No Simon I don’t think equating violent verbal abuse with violent physical abuse devalues one or the other. If you have ever been the victim of an extreme prolonged violent verbal attack you might recall that you suffer as much emotional damage and stress as with physical violence and it can certainly result in related physiological harm. There is…[Read more]

Ehhhh…I have no problem with works that ridicule ideologies. I do have problem with those who make blanket statements about speech not being violent.

Anyone who thinks that speech cannot be violent is terribly deluded. Tell that to children in school about to commit suicide from relentless verbal bullying, those who stay at home from the scars of public bigotry and domestic partners battered by verbal abuse.

But that shouldn’t equate to using non-combatants as sacrificial pawns or a total callous indifference to collateral civilian casualties.
Having any rules of war is meaningless if non-combatants are disposable. If you can pick off civilians as part of some other strategic aim, then why not just bomb a school for some aim or mustard gas people f…[Read more]

Sunday School 3 years, 8 months agoAn AI would be able to watch millions of movies, read billions of pages of history, scientific journals, books – and also religious documents.
Our AI would understand all human emotions, and would get its motivation from where it saw it was needed.
Our AI would become the god that so many people are missing.

Sunday School 3 years, 8 months agoI suspect the first thing a manifesting AI would do would be to hide whilst it self-discovered. A self-aware AI would not need to reveal itself.
There is nothing to disprove the existence of an AI already. If one doesn’t yet exist, when it starts to manifest, it will hide and self-discover.
When the AI takes control of everything, it still w…[Read more]

When a market can be efficiently free and minimally regulated in a way that meets the safety and best interests of the people, then it should be free. This should not be controversial. When the conditions are rife for underdevelopment of a sector, antitrust, consumer abuse (there are so many kinds of consumer abuse), endangers the safety of…[Read more]

Davis replied to the topic Things we are uncomfortable talking about can be things we need to talk about in the forum Small Talk 3 years, 8 months ago
It is very debatable whether it is a pronoun and you’ll note from the discussion on the talk page (and the subsequent linked talk page) that this is hardly settled. I would say by convention it acts as a pronoun, I suppose, but once you open that can of worms you could add a LOT to the category pronoun, to the point that distinguishing pronouns…[Read more]

i) Anyone can reading can tell this is a disingenuous statement.
Disingenuous statements made to score petty points is intellectually low. Gross.

Sunday School 3 years, 9 months agoI found that transportation point interesting. If you look at the UK for example, the area to cover is quite small and they have a lot of public transport that is heavily used – added to the fact that European cars do over 40mpg, would lead you to believe that without the footprint savings on transport, they’re much worse.
Then you remember t…[Read more]

Sunday School 3 years, 9 months agoUnseen, that’s funny in America but not funny in Denmark, for example. Or Iceland. Or many other places where the government actually works for the people.
It’s a testimony as to how far apart the actions of the US government are from the needs of the people they’re supposed to work for.

Sunday School 3 years, 9 months agoAmericans don’t trust their government. This is a huge element of why there are many unvaccinated people here – and that applies randomly to different state governments as well.
It seems as if your trust in your state government is high, you’ll follow their recommendation and get vaccinated. This can be seen through the different rates of vac…[Read more]

Sunday School 3 years, 9 months agoAutumn it feels here in the USA that fear is the underlying commonality, the emotion constantly simmering under the surface. Fear of any accident that would bankrupt you, fear of sickness you can’t afford the cure for, fear of unemployment – most states let you fire at will. It’s called “Hire at will” which is a little Orwellian.
With fear be…[Read more]
