PopeBeanie replied to the topic Is Pedophilia Just Another Sexual Orientation? in the forum Science 7 years, 4 months ago
From the very first paragraph that describes the video on the youtube page Unseen linked to:
A disgusting TEDx Talk trying to normalize pedophilia by declaring that “pedophilia is a natural sexual orientation, just like heterosexuality”.
In fact “normalize” is used deridingly in the (youtubed) TEDx Talk title itself. Note the ignorance shown even…[Read more]

Consciousness 7 years, 4 months agoThis is an area of theory and study that emphasizes how brains evolved and function solely in the context of how it supports the survival and natural evolution of the physical body it’s in. As human intellect expands its boundaries from surviving in caves, bands, or tribes, to arts, sciences, widely social and political interests, it’s too easy to…[Read more]

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Are we fucked or what? in the forum Politics 7 years, 4 months ago
Thinking of a larger context, from (say) a biological systems perspective. Long term, ecosystems survive longest when they evolve to survive in the long term. Almost a tautology, but really, think of the algae bloom that sometimes pops up and grows uncontrollably, sucking up all the oxygen from the water and leaving behind toxins. It’s often…[Read more]

PopeBeanie replied to the topic A couple of questions about our prison system in the forum Politics 7 years, 4 months ago
Yeah, this is a Christian Nation entitlism thing; oppression from the majority; and righteous support of capital punishment. I think of these traditions as comparable to Sharia Law. US Armed Forces provide a wider choice of religious services and support, which I haven’t thought enough about, so I don’t feel informed enough to comment.
Good topic.

PopeBeanie started the topic ALL CAPS? in the forum Small Talk 7 years, 4 months ago
I wanted to complain about an all caps headline, but don’t want to sound like a style nazi. In fact to a large extent, I dislike style itself because, I dunno, it’s too often from excessive stylism. (My dictionary tells me that ‘stylism’ is a misspelling, err, misspelled word, err, not even a word, but I still think it’s worthwhile and meaningful…[Read more]

Avant-garde means something like ‘the cutting edge’. Surely it has to be contextual. An item cannot be cutting edge in isolation. It has to be compared to similar items in an acknowledged grouping. Without a perceived edge, it’s a meaningless expression.

So many awful people to choose from.No fair just yelling “Wilbur Ross!” Our secretary of commerce appeared to be trying to sweep the field last week when he expressed bafflement that federal workers were going to food banks during the government shutdown rather than taking out loans.
Ross also volunteered that 800,0…

Here’s a paragraph from the article:
Much of the thinking is informed by Bloomberg’s experience in the 2018 midterms, when he spent more than $100 million to become the single biggest Democratic donor, winning in 21 of the 24 races where his Independence USA PAC got directly involved.

Perhaps an internet overflowing with supposed “avant-garde” content and circulation pretty much dilutes any specialness it could have had.
However, I don’t see why it couldn’t exist in (say) museums, and other privatized and/or elite venues. After all, upper classes in our civilizations have enriched the possibilities of leisure activity, at lea…[Read more]

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Does Dr. Brian Cox need to be taken out to the logic woodshed? in the forum Science 7 years, 5 months ago
Seems Feynman’s point about explaining “why” to someone would also apply to explaining “how”, which makes me wonder more why (whoops!) I’m prejudiced against the word why in a scientific context. I can imagine scientists wondering why an experiment worked or not, and then determining how to manipulate its outcome. Kids like to ask why more than…[Read more]

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Does Dr. Brian Cox need to be taken out to the logic woodshed? in the forum Science 7 years, 5 months ago
We’re speaking of probabilities; generalizations about how universal laws can be understood as determinants in the forward flow of time. My life view (currently or increasingly) is to avoid the “why” questions and focus on the “how” explanations. The fact that we can even consider time going backwards is a mystery to me, deserving of a medal or…[Read more]
