@jakelafort: It seems every woman i have ever known who described to me how she had been abused as a child is mentally ill.
Not mentally ill, jake. Experiencing post-traumatic stress. Which, btw, is no more a disorder than the immune response is.
Do you want to get me started on that?

Belle, if you evolved to believe in a god, you did not evolve to argue with atheists! Knock it off!

Nerdy, after 12 years in Catholic schools I freed myself from its fictions. Imagination knows no bounds so I ignore hypotheticals.
Maybe, after you expound on “Suppose it’s all false.”

A placeholder. I like that name for it. Isn’t the numeral for ‘zero’ also a placeholder?

Reg, thanks for the link to Theory of Mind. I’ve read of it three times in about two years now. Did the person who named it that give any thought to whether the name was misleading? (I suppose my asking that brings into question whether I have a theory of mind on the point.)

Belle, anger is a sign of good health.
You know the flight or fight thing. Fear gives people the energy they need to take flight; anger gives people the energy they need to fight. -

Having done twelve years in RC schools, two of them in Jesuit 9th and 10th grades, I learned to see teaching priests as intellectual bullies. They won those rounds.
Thirty-plus years later I got my revenge. While on a jury with a Catholic priest who looked young enough to have recently completed training, we went to lunch and happened to sit…[Read more]

A noun (atheism) is unavoidably a verb (the act of rejecting….)?
Fascinating. -

Belle, the last remaining kid in the class who believes in Santa Claus might have hope. Would it be cruel to take it from him?

I did say, but not clearly, that I will let the evidence prevail.

Science — the kind that requires evidence and reason. 8 years, 9 months agoNice video, Beanie. But, prepare yourself for the real shocker–and “shocker” isn’t a pun.
The EU model says electricity (lightning bolts far larger than any we know) made the craters–be they round or any other shape.
There is reason for the name “Electric Universe”.

Science — the kind that requires evidence and reason. 8 years, 9 months agoLET’S GET STARTED. REMEMBER, SCIENCE WITH EVIDENCE AND THAT USES REASON.
If you squeeze the entire universe tightly enough, will it occupy less space than the smallest of particles?
I doubted it. (The other boys in my sixth grade class in a Catholic school had reason to call me a doubting Thomas.)

@Arcus-political combat, usually over economic issues, is not a philosophy or political science or history classroom.
