@tomsarbeck – I think the terms can be manipulated for political purposes, but surely the “others” only go from “weird” to “bad” when they become a threat to “us”.

It very well could be the case. There have been no shortage of homophobic crusaders spitting out vile word vomit against LGTB, and then getting caught having gay sex…in a bathroom, in their own political office, via Grindr, in hotels under false names, with masseuses and escorts, and lets not forget the religious leaders who are a…[Read more]

@tomsarbeck I think it’s the guilt. When those trying to shed the chains of Catholicism feel guilty about something, it drags them back to the confessional as they have not learned how to process guilt in a secular way.

@TomSarbeck – I think it’s good that you question the metaphor, but I do think it is appropriate. In the case of the moon, the dark side is always the dark side.

@tomsarbeck – no, it’s not. But I can see you’re trying to yank on everyone’s tail as hard as you can. It’s tiresome, and that kind of shenanigan doesn’t belong on a discussion board.

@tomsarbeck – “Will you reply, “Yes, but….” to that?”
– it would be better if you stop playing silly yank-the-tail games.

@tomsarbeck – I can see your point, they would both actually stay in the air for the same length of time. However, due to the rotation of the Earth, maybe one would cover a larger distance along the Earth’s surface than the other.

@tomsarbeck – why? I don’t think it’s ever wrong to ask a question, no matter how daft.

@davis, @tomsarbeck, thanks for your ideas. This is how it seems to play out:
It’s interesting to consider the ancient evolutionary conditions of the human race, when “unconditional love” was likely to be the dominant social environment, and how this links to present-day ideas of human rights, and also, our instincts to care about…[Read more]

@tomsarbeck – another definition of tit-for-tat reciprocity is “fairness in exchanges”, so your idea makes sense in that context. i.e. it’s not fair if someone is evil to you for no reason.
-
Simon Paynton replied to the topic Love Never Fails in the forum Small Talk 7 years ago
@tomsarbeck – “please consider moving tit-for-tit to the middle middle of your spectrum. At the end tit4tat formerly occupied, put sociopathy.”
– you’re probably right actually.
Another feature of a long term working relationship is “respectful protest”: taking someone to account in a respectful way, with the assumption that each person is a…[Read more]

@tomsarbeck Tom, “theory of mind” never sounded right to me, either, maybe because it sounds too science-jargony. Ever since I read about mirror neurons in chimps and watched an Empathic Civilzation video, it made more sense to me to focus on empathy as an animal basis of feeling each other’s moods & thoughts, whether between chimps or even…[Read more]
