I agree, there are two things that the Church provides that secular society doesn’t, so much: moral instruction, and community. It’s hard to come by those things outside of religion.
Community is easier in a small town, than in a big city. On the other hand, a small town can be a hot house for the toxic side of human nature. For example, sm…[Read more]

Sunday School 3 years, 12 months agoI was going on Frans de Waal’s conclusion after writing “Different: what apes can teach us about gender”. He says “sex is approximately binary”.
I read the article. I found it a bit confused.

Is moral expertise possible? This is an interesting and well-informed article. In nearly every case the clash with women’s rights is much like the way abolition, desegregation, and racial equality clashed with white rights or the way women’s suffrage and the right to work clashed with men’s rights. Is that not a false analogy? Because women aren’t the oppressors of trans people: society in general is.

Sunday School 4 years agoI think maybe there are two kinds of “trans rights” in the world, in that some are asserting the right to be who you are every day; and some are extreme (i.e., unlikely) border conditions that could clash with women’s rights.

Here is an example of being “spiritual without being religious”: the BBC Radio 4 Prayer for the Day with Dr Steve Taylor. If you don’t want to listen (2 minutes) you can just read the text. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0017clr He has done one every day this week. Today it’s about being grateful to be alive.

it’s great to understand ecology but to frame it as blessings and gifts is ego-centric nonsense that implies creation and sentience.
-
Well, it’s a healthy positive way to see them. What else would people call them? Shite? Ecology and mother Earth are the best things we have.
-
It’s obnoxious to always make yourself the center of the damn universe. That is what religion and “spirituality” are all about. A total blow-up of own significance. When will we grow the fuck up already?

I agree, but each of us is no. 1 to ourselves. It’s a thing.

How lucky we are to be walking on the Earth
Simon, some of us are lucky. Billions of people are not. They live in abject poverty, abuse, oppressive circumstances, hunger, neglect, discrimination, pain, war, disease and for many…several of the above. There is very little relief. An astronaut has a lot to be happy about. A poor starving boy…-
Yes, for some people, life is just a cruel soul-destroying burden. But for everyone else, there are things to be grateful for.

Thanks to clicking your name, I finally figured out how to reply to these threads without creating a new one. For that, I am very grateful. 😁

No Simon…it is for MOST people. Something easy to overlook while enjoying your privileged life. It’s like going to a singles bar with some couples and telling the whole audience to be grateful for the happy romantic relationship they are a part of.
-
You’re saying that for most people, life is just a cruel soul-destroying burden? I don’t believe that’s true. If so, it’s bad news.
-
I think if that was the case, the suicide rate would be through the roof. Most people would be actively suicidal.

@ysumlin – “white people are pure evil savages.” I didn’t know I was an evil savage, because of the colour of my skin. Thanks for informing me. I’ll just go and shoot myself now, for being white.

What does that mean?Like I said (above), there are a number of different varieties of fairness, all based on the idea of equality. This one specifies equal respect for people’s needs, so that the greater the need, the greater the help, in order to make opportunities equal.

Sunday School 4 years, 1 month agoI know it’s boring, but I’m not sure about these definitions of equality and equity. As far as I could tell from my research in the academics, “equity” is poorly defined and means one thing one place and something else another. I have come to the conclusion that “equity” means “being fair”, and equality is the basis of fairness: equality of f…[Read more]
