    From observing atheists.

And the 1 billion atheists in and around China? The ones who utterly outnumber any of the kind of atheists you’ve observed?

  • Davis replied to the topic God we can understand in the forum Theism 6 years, 10 months ago

Faith doesn’t just mean “believing things without evidence”. It also means “trust” or “confidence in”.

Simon…in this context those are the same bloody thing.

  • Davis replied to the topic God we can understand in the forum Theism 6 years, 10 months ago

As atheists, we like to be logical

Where do you get this idea Simon?

  • Davis replied to the topic God we can understand in the forum Theism 6 years, 10 months ago

but the bottom line is that being certain has no probative value.

A really fascinating topic. Watch how little certainty means as we go up the ladder of diminishing efficacy in convincing or assuring others:

    1. I’m certain Camden market is open every day

    2. I’m certain John was born in London

    3. I’m certain Sarah’s favourite colour is blue

  • Honestly, I don’t give a flying fuck what you all believe or don’t believe.

They why should we give a flying fuck about what you have to say?

I just like seeing you all get riled up and defensive.

That’s a pretty strong sign of trolling.

It really shows your true colors.

What, that we defend our arguments. I’m glad someone came along and exp…[Read more]

  • It probably would not take that much to convince everyone, really. I believe in the existence of dinosaurs. I believe in the existence of the planet Venus.

Indeed. And it’s amazing the crazy things that turn out to be true…when you have that, what’s that little annoying thing? What is it called? Oh yeah. EVIDENCE!

No one ever wins in a trade war.

The Chinese weren’t getting away with anything. They offered good compensation to knowledgeable Westerners to come to China and help them develop their own products. They also outright bought the information they needed directly from companies, information managers or technical institutes. They got their hands on some info through nefarious means…[Read more]

By the way Ivy, the trump filter can be found here for Chrome (if you have a different browser you’ll likely find one if you google your browser and “trump filter”.

  • There are two kinds of “core” universal morality: 1) helping; 2) fairness.

That only makes sense in a highly idiosyncratic system of morality. And even then, it’s still incredible vague. (kinds of “core”…)??? And fairness is probably not the best term to use, if you are, which I can only guess, referring to something along the lines of justice/virtue.

  • I installed a Trump filter some months ago. It removes all references to Trump, all news stories and his tweets. In discussions and comments his name simply disappears but I can tell by context or a missing name who is being mentioned. I do this because I have a low tolerance threshold for people knowingly talking bullshit denying truth and full…[Read more]

    Sigh. I give up.

  • I do think that we ALL know deep down that we are connected to “God”/”The Great Sprit” whatever you want to call “it/him/her.”

I mean really…you have totally lost all intellectual dignity when you resort to bullshit like this. I could easily say “I do think that ALL religious people know deep down that their preposterous childish beliefs are…[Read more]

  • So because I’m atheist, I can’t use the word ‘spiritual’ to describe something that doesn’t relate to a God?

We’re adults. And as atheists I’d say, in a sense, we are also more adult-like in some intellectual ways. And adults get to make up their own rules. So no, there is nothing stopping you from using spiritual if you like. I simply recommend…[Read more]

Yeah you’ve just defined something referring to two other things that are extremely vaguely defined. “The human spirit”? Sounds like an enormous box where you put everything that’s difficult to sum upto words. “Soul”. I think there are about…[Read more]

  • @davis – we can give you definitions til we’re blue in the face, but you will probably continue to ignore them.

That’s because you rarely give a definition that actually describes things in meaningful ways. They are full of weasel words, vagueries, subject avoiding, non-committal references and basically ever device imaginable to avoid making any…[Read more]

We have an expression in Spanish (…lo dijo Blas…). It refers to any situation where someone cries “foul” but in reality that person is as guilty or flagrantly drippingly guilty of the very thing they’re complaining someone else does.

  • It seems then that your view aligns with most of ours and you are referring more to awe and fascination than anything. Which is very admirable. I highly recommend ditching the term spirituality. I’m yet to read a single text, book or comment referring to spirituality in a secular sense that didn’t confuse or overcomplicate things. Nothing is…[Read more]

I think the word “spiritual” is damaged good. It comes along with too much baggage, including highly religious rituals, some fairly dangerous forms of spirituality like hyper-fasting and mental manipulation (not always so safe) and the practice of alternative medicine (which can even be deadly). I think what you’d be wise to do is simply do the…[Read more]
