Sunday School 5 years ago110ºF – too much. Hit 104ºF (about 40ºC ) once in Malta and spent most of the week in an air conditioned bar. About 74ºF in Dublin today. I don’t want more than that.

Sunday School 5 years agoInteresting opinion piece here* about how Catholic bishops are wrong about Biden and about abortion. It is written by a Catholic too.
*NYT article so might be behind a paywall.

Sunday School 5 years agoI am not a user of social media. I have no Instagram or Twitter account. I have a FB account which is only used to get interesting news and science stories that I have requested. I seldom engage in any commentary on it. I have specifically stated that I am an atheist and only interested in hearing from atheists. I do not want to be “friended” by…[Read more]

Sunday School 5 years agoWhen it comes to the displacement of indigenous peoples I am reminded of the quote attributed to Desmond Tutu:
“When the missionaries came to Africa, they had the Bible and we had the land. They said ‘Let us pray.’ We closed our eyes. When we opened them, we had the Bible and they had the land.”
The mass graves of exploited children, both in…[Read more]

As another mass grave is discovered in Canada, the Catholic Church considers preventing President Biden from eating the flesh of Jesus. It is also busy in Italy, defending its right to discriminate against the LGBT community.
Catholic Church response to sexual abuse must center on survivor well-being, not defensiveness.
Former megachurch…[Read more]

@Davis – ….it just seems like “fairness” is a half-hearted concept in sports.
Any Olympian with a medal would say “I won my Olympic medal because I was ruthless in my pursuit of it”. There might be less than once second between first place and last place in the 100M final. When Usain Bolt won his, who finished 4th in any of those races? I can’…[Read more]

On the whole, though, a previously male athlete is likely to have a physical advantage over most of the female competition.
It feels intuitively true that males who have transitioned would have an advantage. I will stand corrected on what follows as I have not investigated it too deeply but…..I don’t think this is necessarily the case.
When a m…[Read more]

I once told somebody that the odds of me winning the rollover lotto in Georgia are the same whether or not I buy a ticket 🙂

Reg the Fronkey Farmer replied to the topic What is a random number? in the forum Science 5 years ago
If you get the computer to produce the sequence then it is not really a random number as it is based on a program written to generate the numbers.
If you were to rearrange the numbers on the number pad ( The zero key could be anything from 1-9) and then allow your office cat to walk on the keyboard (as they do!) then is that number “more random”…[Read more]

Always have time to make Christians feel the Paine…….
Thomas Paine, in 1775, when he wrote his article on “Justice and Humanity,” was the first to demand emancipation in a lucid manner. The campaign for liberation of the slaves was therefore inaugurated by a freethinker, and triumphantly closed by another freethinker, Abraham Lincoln. In this…[Read more]

@jakelafort – How does theology advance?
Kant destroyed the “proofs” for the existence of god(s) and that was a crowbar to divorce theology from philosophy. Modern philosophy is secular by nature and has no concerns about ancient gods.
Thomas Paine advanced theology to its correct place in intellectually reasoned thought.
“The study of t…[Read more]

Sunday School 5 years ago@TheEncogitationer – I would basically agree with what you say. One word I listen out for is “Traditional”. I have heard people claim not to be right leaning or even to be liberals while at the same time telling me that we must hold on to “traditional family values”.

Reg the Fronkey Farmer replied to the topic When will the Feds give up on "You should never pay a ransom"? in the forum Small Talk 5 years, 1 month ago
Yes, I was thinking about that. The FBI or NSA would be unlikely to disclose how that was done. I am speculating here but I suspect that the code used to transfer the funds had a “bug” attached to it that told the FBI the bank (or digital wallet) the bitcoins were sent to. Similar to a bug placed in a briefcase given to kidnappers in the movies…[Read more]

Much of the bitcoin ransom paid over the Continental Pipeline attack has been recovered. Next week, President Biden will be telling Putin that he has enough of this malarkey already!
