Objective methods don’t work.
@Robert. Indeed. One thing I very much like about deontological moral systems, is that you become the law maker. No one needs to dictate laws to you. The only challenge is how seriously you take your own moral rules. Under some versions of deontological morality, there is no better or worse crime (in theory), only b…[Read more]

Sunday School 8 years ago@robert – “Sometimes competition turns to cruelty. I reserve my use of the word evil for that case.”
– I would define it as “destructive power and control”.
As I understand it, an enlightened person doesn’t generate negative karma: they don’t do unnecessarily harmful things. So by definition, an evil person can’t be enlightened.

@robert – I think it’s something of a dilemma. What would Judge Judy do?

@robert – “When one uses the term “greater good”, objectivity and universality are cooked.”
– I think that the greater good can be universalised, not as the greatest good for the greatest number, but the greatest good for each individual. This is achieved through universal human rights (or could be) where the individual is given the maximum bene…[Read more]

@robert – “The formula Jesus gave us was that human sacrifice is required”
– he actually got himself killed for the sake of being meek and mild. That’s a strong statement. If you think about it, self-sacrifice is required if we are to be kind to somebody. He just took it all the way.

@robert, everything happens for a reason.
We just rephrase the “why” question, like “How have banjos evolved?”.

- Indeed @Robert . The concept of a lack of something as still somehow a kind of that something…isn’t hard to understand in just about any life example except with religion. Because…you know…religion…so they say…apparently.

2. I have a red napkin

@robert – you could say it’s sensible both ways. The females are also protected from potential unwanted male attention. After all, it’s an intimate setting for an impersonal relationship. -

@robert – sounds sensible.
Sensible that a meeting between a male and a female costs 33-50% more ? It’s OK, I guess; consumers get to pick up the tab, ultimately. And people wonder why things are so expensive.

Mo Brooks, a lawmaker on the Science committee who thinks rocks falling into the ocean raises sea levels don’t bring much to the table. Other school boards in Florida still entertain opponents of both E…[Read more]
