One major reason for discriminating against women, especially in businesses too small to be subject to fairness in hiring laws is a result of #MeToo.This sounds too much (to me) like framing the issue as if it’s the victim’s fault. Investment in the future means “profits this quarter to raise all boats”. Well yeah, all boats will actually rise, over decades. What pisses me off is how interest groups–religious like creationists and pro-lifers, corporate lobbyists, most libertarians and many conservatives are wearing blinders that block out real science for their own…[Read more]

Humanism 7 years agoI’m generally in favor of affirmative action measures, but the ones that have passed legislation (and then failed) lack guidelines for monitoring their effects. In particular, specific measurements from specific agencies should be outlined and periodically reconsidered, including guidelines for how to taper off every affirmative action program o…[Read more]

I like Hemant. But for some (idiotic, thin-skinned?) reason, I wonder first if he’s attacking people like me:
Every time I see an article about the Jehovah’s Witnesses, or Scientologists, or any other relatively small but powerful religion, there are inevitably commenters who chime in and say, “It’s a cult!”
Which makes you wonder: How come those…

Cults obviously have a lot in common with religion, and I’ve seen several times people say they’re no significant differences. I’m going to start a list of differences here, perhaps one video or story at a time.

I’m not as clear on the process as I first thought, so (from wikipedia unless they are wrong!) to be precise (bold is mine and I split one paragraph into two):
Similar to the British system, Article One of the United States Constitution gives the House of Representatives the sole power of impeachment and the Senate the sole power to try…
