5 Billion years. Isn’t it funny that we look to measure the lifetime of the universe, based on the number of times an insignificant star in an outer spiral arm has been circumnavigated by the third of eight planets in its orbit?
Reg, I loved Ozymandias from the first time I read it.

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Sunday School December 30th 2018 in the forum
Sunday School 7 years, 6 months agoI had a lot to write here about Mead and religious gang history, but I’ll just summarize by saying I’m not embarrassed about promoting atheism in meaningful ways, and feeling like it’s for a good purpose, in fact even for what I consider to be a transcendental, greater good!

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Defining Consciousness, et al in the forum
Consciousness 7 years, 6 months agoHere’s Oliver Sacks, also focusing on hallucinations, but more specifically in patients experiencing them in the classic “I’m seeing or hearing things that aren’t there” sense. The link I’m providing skips past about half the video for people who want to just jump into the denser content, but you can click at the beginning of the time bar if you w…[Read more]

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Cant Think Of A Title in the forum Survivors – A group for everyone 7 years, 6 months ago
I can’t think of anything mantra-like, but some kinds of anxiety can be cognitively understood and soothed over time. It’s quite natural to fear the dark, since we still have the same genetic makeup we had long ago while facing survival challenges, e.g. with predators about. I suspect you know cognitively, i.e. common sense wise, that most…[Read more]

PopeBeanie started the topic Neural Correlates of Consciousness in the forum
Consciousness 7 years, 6 months agoJust as in any study of “Neural Correlates of _________” (fill in the blank), the neurosciences are still at primitive stages. Let’s accumulate a list of new ideas and discoveries, specifically regarding the science of how consciousness (or aspects of it) emerges from brains. I’ll occasionally update this post with new links, starting with:

the lack of threaded conversationsI, too, wish we could display nested threads, although not as much as I use to wish. AZ “flat” style presentation is more linear in time, and much easier to follow when all one wants to do is catch up on what’s happened since they were last here, in an overview kind of perspective. The one thing I…[Read more]

Sunday School 7 years, 6 months ago“Who would want to be morally perfect?”
I once had a watchmaker try to sell me a $10,000 watch. I suggested for that money I could fly to Hong Kong, stay in the finest hotel, and have an identical one forged for me before returning first class to the UK. He told me the watch was accurate to the extent it would lose 0.001 seconds over twenty year…[Read more]

That’s the question, though. Is there sex in heaven? Where’s @michael17 when you want him?

Strega replied to the topic How Is Christianity NOT Polytheism? in the forum Theism 7 years, 6 months ago
I want to know if there is sex in heaven. Nobody has ever answered me on this one. I know in Allahs place there’s sex, because of the promise of 72 virgins – although after a while, you’d run out of virgins. Unless they re-virginate over night. So much to think about. But really, does anyone have any idea if the Christian heaven includes sex…[Read more]

Thank you for that, I had to favorite this topic. Awesome summary of how myths can evolve in culture from sun worshiping (esp. during culture-wide agricultural and language development) and then into humanized dieties, and finally into one human-like deity (monotheism).
Until now I’d been over-thinking about possible neuro-based, unconsciously…[Read more]

Mom :- Oh they’re just ladies, dear
Taxi Driver (turning over his shoulder) :- Go on, tell him the truth! They’re whores, that…[Read more]

Strega replied to the topic Why do you (or don't you) participate in Christmas? in the forum Small Talk 7 years, 6 months ago
We have adult children who have their own children in some cases. In order to avoid clashing invitations with other sides of family, we invented Cranksgiving. We choose a Saturday somewhere between Christmas and Thanksgiving, and combine the traditional turkey dinner with all the gift giving. This year it’s 15th Dec. And somehow ‘Cr…[Read more]

Here’s the best lecture yet I’ve seen on how to respond to creationists. If you don’t want to watch the whole 80 minute video (which imo is good in every minute, by the way), we jump (below) into when Dr. Donald Prothero presents encyclopedic evidence for transitional species:
