But this one has freckles. I don’t think modern cows have freckles, except when they’re young, or Irish.

(People here know most of the following, big-picture summary with a dose of speculation.)
Fossil history is about finding bits and pieces, amounting to a very small sample of the complete history. The probability of locating and discovering any species depends on its population over time, geographical spaces, conditions of preservation, and other…[Read more]

Consciousness 6 years, 1 month agoAI is usually, in itself, a side-issue to a discussion of consciousness, yet people love to speculate on the inevitability of consciousness in AI. This, before we can even define our own consciousness. I personally feel that purposefully building any “consciousness” into AI could be considered as unethical as it would be to experiment with any huma…[Read more]

Not that intellectual maybe, but geek-related:
Cab (or Lyft) driver tries to start up the vehicle, once, twice, three times. Finally says “Ok, I’ve seen this one before. Everyone get out and then get back in”.
(If you don’t get it, it might be you’re too young.)

16 April, Trump claimed we’ve now performed more tests per capita than South Korea. Incredulous, I checked, and sure enough he’s not significantly incorrect. (See screen captures of world testing data, below.) It’s a good milestone, but reaching it this late in the pandemic’s history is (imo) a major stain on Trump’s…[Read more]
