@Jakelafort I have some vague memory of him prognosticating or hoping for a gradual emancipation.
Yes, I remember thinking that too at some point.
I may not have the context completely correct with this quote by Jefferson when he wrote:
“These have sucked in the principles of liberty as it were with their mother’s milk, and it is to them I lo…[Read more]

@Jakelafort – When I wrote “I think religions are a blight on mankind and have held us back for too long“, I was being extra polite just as you were when you replied to the sentiment 🙂 I would have written paragraphs if I had continued.

@jakelafort – thanks for the kinds words. But I ain’t no saint though J
@Robert – Yes, a good point. I seldom use the word as a descriptor of myself. The default position is atheism as we are born without belief in any god. When people do become religious it is almost always via indoctrination into the beliefs of their community and whate…[Read more]

@Jakelafort – Yes, my use of “Pantheist” is incorrect. Spinoza was one but the Pope would still believe his boss was real. He is still the Cuddly One though! Here is a list of some of my favorite past Popes

Sunday School 6 years, 2 months agoGiving your proven command of written English l am happy that “Exaptation” has added to it. Its usage may have a certain patavinity in academic circles and in debate it may even sound like an obfuscation to outsiders and lead to accusations of ultracrepidarianism. It can pay dividends to not become lexiphanic when discussing Evo…[Read more]

@Jakelafort – I played a video game called Just Cause 4 where early on in the game the protagonist says “A plan is just a list of things that can go wrong”. Then he starts shooting everything up!
At work I recently stated that I will manage any project that I am to be involved in or I will not be involved. Rather tyrannical but I am good at what…[Read more]

Talking snakes and transubstantiation are from Roman Christianity and non – biblical The assumption of the Virgin and mariology are also Roman and the bases for the belief in the false apparition. The virgin birth and the talking serpent are biblical and can be questioned by nonbelievers.

1. remember: polls are really bullshit.
2. Two words for you: Electoral College. He is winning in all the right places. The Midwest LOVES him and he can do no wrong. And those farmers who are pissed off at him are NOT saying they would necessarily vote against him. Many of them still rationalize it to where they still think he is the…[Read more]

But Trump is NOT a reflection of the majority, rather of a frighteningly large minority.
I wish that were true.

@Jakelafort – I was carping……hmmm or possibly attempting to create a precedent for future argument, even a binding element whose ratio decidendi would be unwittingly defined by today’s comments. I see the hook through the bait for that carp. 🙂
Have you no shame?
I will ask my local Catholic bishop if I should have some. He should know…[Read more]

Yes, I stand corrected. It may appear to be proven as it is a subjective experience, “belief” is the correct word. A case of obiter dictum 🙂

@JakeLafort I suspect polyamorous relationships are not romantic relationships at all. They may be close as friends, but any romance is characterized by an ardent and intense attraction, which is why they tend to be selfish. They may love each other in polyamorous pairings, but it is a cousin of friends with benefits. Their relationship may have…[Read more]

@jakelafort – that’s a good point, as @robert also made. But what can we say to someone to justify it, philosophically, as it were? What would Judge Judy say?
Something along the lines of “you enjoy good consequences, therefore you admit that the consequences belong to you.”

No Ivy the problem of evil was not part of the deconstruction of your premonition. I brought it up late because you said we will be extinct in 30 years.
Yes because we are stupid idiots and are ruining the planet beyond reparable recognition!

….engage him intellectually in any topic.
That should be all that is required. After all it is a job interview for POTUS. As a smart woman once said, When they go low we go high. He only trades in insults and name calling because he cannot do highbrow debates.

The quality of life in the secular nation is far better
It REALLY depends on how you measure quality of life.
I think it’s easy for you to say that. But that’s not true for everyone. I live in one of the most secular parts of the US and my quality of life in the things that really matter is shit.

We all know science is a way to learn about the natural world-best tool we have.
It is the best we have. Unfortunately it too is riddled with politics. There are so many things that should be studied that aren’t being studied just because there’s no funding for it…
Religion is a way to preserve lies and entrench power.
Religion has s…[Read more]
