Sorry for the negativity there. I plan to overcome it, in spite of pervasive negativity. Back to the topic, regarding CDC, yes, they have major weaknesses. But the Trump era nastiness and revolt against trusting in federal agencies and against unifying states’ effectiveness in fighting the pandemic did not help, either. Science even became the bad…[Read more]

Pope i am not sure if you are saying that those are unique human traits or traits that uniquely propelled us. Science — the kind that requires evidence and reason. 4 years, 4 months agoI’m noticing our innate tendency to simplify our scientific explanations, even among scientists, but especially in journalism. While I’m personally still struggling with how to discuss further nuances with people, without putting them to sleep. Please feel free to brew a pot of any caffeine-laced beverage… I’ll get further and farther into…[Read more]

I’m so sorry Davis. Reg helped me a lot when my mum died, by getting me to go around her friends and learn new stories about her.
I have to say, some four years later, that a few of those stories still crack me up – in particular the one where she was in the back seat of my brother and wife’s car as they drove in France and got stopped for spe…[Read more]

You seem to trust absolutely that the military will stay within the guard rails, but if Gen. Unfortunately, at large, it’s human nature to feel more empathy for one person they see in need of help, than for larger and faceless groups of people in need of help. Although often enough, it’s our local people (with visible faces) whom we need to help (for practical reasons) before we can move on to helping the larger crowd.

(I haven’t yet read Unseen’s The Republicans Want a Right-Wing Dictatorship, which sounds at least somewhat related to my thoughts, below.)
