@davis – I enjoyed listening to Kristina’s perspective.
The primary function of any civil rights activist is to denounce injustice. Then, presumably, some kinds of protest, whereby they show the whole world in dignified and respectable ways, which can include strikes and boycotts, the reality of their oppressed situation for everyone to…[Read more]

@Davis We have handed over many essential systems to technology so that they pretty much run on computer-managed autopilot. Electrical grids, water systems, sewage systems, a lot of air traffic control is computer-assisted. You can probably think of even more. There’s a lot of damage they can do “bolted to the floor.”

@davis – let’s give the theologians a break. Some of them are still working on the implications of cloning “Dolly the sheep”. I have often had conversations with theists on the ethics of creating “fronkeys” by genetically mixing the DNA of frogs and donkeys 🙂
Does it matter which one is the male and female? It…[Read more]

I’vy that definition is so broad that even cats have free will. Do you think cats have free will?
I don’t know enough about cat brain anatomy to answer that question. I think they have a prefrontal cortex but it’s not like ours. I don’t know enough about cat brains to comment LOL

@davis – it would be informative for you to explain some of the theories you have read about.
That would be a first.

So what’s your definition of free will Ivy?
The ability to choose your own path. Simple. I don’t think natural scientists can really speak to free will. I think it’s something the field of psychology can address. We make decisions with the information we have at the time under our own individual unique circumstances. Sometimes we “get…[Read more]

RE: We don’t even have sufficient information to form a confident theory of consciousness and the best ones are laboriously technical.
I don’t think (IMHO), For the sake of discussion and argument that it has to be overly complicated. When we are in a regulated state, we are able to think properly. When we are in a state such as fight fli…[Read more]

No worries that was funny 😂 my current philosophy on religion is really complicated. Don’t have time to write a lengthy post but will do tonight after work 😂

@Davis – That girl is me.
RE: And I’m certain in some environments where the number of religious people are high that religious groups can virtually monopolise the opportunities for “joining a community” but I don’t agree for a second that it is the “only” solution.
You are wrong on so many levels. But we can agree to disagree.

@davis, you removed my entire reply lol.
Is not “suffering less” equivalent to “pleasure”? Pleasure is a motivator because it indicates moving towards fitness benefits.

Great. I offer one disclaimer: I read that book ca 1974. All I can remember is an exercise called “Dance naked with the music”. I remember doing it, alone, in my flat and that it was great fun.

“What I am against is overly broad claims (just like your friend said).”
Me too. I’ve run across the odd gem over the years. Eg “You Are Not The Target” by Vera Huxley. The book is simply a collection of gestalt techniques and they work.
The kind of books I’m agin are the facile crap often featured by and recommended by Oprah W…[Read more]

My best friend died last year.
He was always reading the latest self help book. One of his cute little aphorisms was:
“If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t you’re right again”
BUT—-when I met him. He was 17 ,working on the line at Chrysler’s and was homeless.
He then went to a teaching hospital and did his general…[Read more]

“especially the: the world wants you to succeed and you can do anything if you just believe in it” .
Yeah, that idea has been around for a very long time. I first came across it in 1969, in “Bring Out The Magic In Your Mind” by a stagemagician called Al Koran. He called ‘the magic’ ‘The Law Of Attraction” .It surfaces every now and t…[Read more]

In most of Western Europe companies offer all kinds of flexibility to parents with sick children. I don’t have a single friend in Spain or Belgium whose career was put on hold or faced aggressive bosses because they had to pick up their sick child and take them to a doctor or who wasn’t given a chance to make up for the work or even jus…
